Mumbai

New York Adding to the suspicions of Pakistan's ISI being linked to the Mumbai terror attacks, Afghanistan said intelligence gathered after the carnage has linked the agency to the unprecedented strike.

Calls were placed from a satellite phone left behind by the attackers to ‘people who were known ISI members or had very strong ties with the ISI,’ Afghanistan's Ambassador to the US T Jawad told the ‘Wall Street Journal’.

Jawad also said there is evidence linking Yusuf Muzammil, the man identified by India as the attacks' chief organiser, to the ISI, but did not provide details.

Meanwhile, the ‘Journal’ in an analytical piece said the US's insistence that Pakistan take strong action against those responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks has ‘aligned’ Washington more closely with the Indian position, but it is unlikely to coax Islamabad to oblige.

"The US is calling on Pakistan to arrest and turn over to India at least some of the suspects in the Mumbai terrorist bombing, aligning the US more closely with a key Indian position," the ‘Journal’ said.

"But Pakistan is unlikely to oblige amid escalating tensions between the nuclear armed South Asian adversaries."

The Indian government is under a lot of pressure from the public for not doing more to prevent this attack, the paper said quoting an unnamed diplomat.

"And they need for their political purposes to point to something demonstratively that's been done,” the diplomat said, adding, ‘an arrest by Pakistan is a big statement. Ideally there'd be some sort of extradition to India.’

US officials were also quoted as saying that many of the 20 people sought by India from Pakistan aren't linked to the Mumbai attacks and New Delhi shouldn't force Islamabad into a position where it can't make concessions.

mumbai attacks by vimal on 04 Dec 2008

Pakistan is NOT ready to take full responsibility for this and says non state actors are involved. What if these non state actors get hold of nuclear material and blow up some city in future. The world needs to wake up and take some serious action in this issue. US , Russia and India should come together and should disarm Pakistan completely. All the nuclear weapons and terrorists should be cleaned out. After the cleanup UN should take over the country till it is ready for elections and democracy. This has to be done NOW without any delay. The world will pay a tremendous price if it ignores this issue. The terrorist issue is a global issue. Russians and Chinese should quit playing politics on this issue. PAKISTAN NEEDS TO BE CLEANED UP. The terrorism nukes and dictatorship is a very dangerous combination. I hold India directly responsible for this situation because they have allowed such things to prosper in their neighbourhood. Keeping quiet is not an option.

Afghan Envoy by dd on 04 Dec 2008

"US officials were also quoted as saying that many of the 20 people sought by India from Pakistan aren't linked to the Mumbai attacks and New Delhi shouldn't force ..." But they were linked to previous terrorist attacks. May be US does not count them because no Americans were among the victims. There is a growing feeling among Indians that Pakistan is American's spoiled child which it protects every time and tells India not to take any action. This growing feeling could prove disastrous for US in the long. run. India should also demand $3 Billion for the lives lost and the injured. And use that money to strengthen the NSG, coast-guard etc. Pakistan needs to FEEL the punishment to reduce recurrences of such attacks in the future.

NOW THE ISSE IS US WARNED INDIA TWICE JUST LAST MONTH ABOUT POSSIBILITY OF BOMBAY BEING ATTACKED BY SEA, INDIA SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, INSTEAD US HAD TO WARN INDIA, NOT JUST THAT INDIA DID NOTHING ABOUT IT. NOW "IF INDIA CAN NOT DEFEND HER SELF SHE CAN NOT LOOK AT US OR PAKISTAN TO DEFEND INDIA. THAY HAVE OTHER BUSINESS FOR THEIR OWN COUNTRIES.

Inept diplomats by Vidya on 04 Dec 2008

How come the Afghan envoy knows what evidence links ISI to the attacks? And what was the point of the Indian government re-submitting the old list of 20 names? What was their connection with the Mumbai attacks? First the politicians crippled India with their appeasement and cowardly policy towards terrorists and now the diplomats are destroying the case by bringing up some old list instead of providing irrefutable proof or specific evidence to suspects in this matter. These neta and babu fat cats have been inactive for so long that they have no idea how to work!

Terrorist State by Tron on 04 Dec 2008

Terror and Pakistan are now synonymous. The country is morally and finacially bankrupt and virtually beyond repair. However civilised nations of the world need to be safeguarded from this country. I suggest the following: 1)Raise a multinational force to destroy all terrorist camps and training schools by whatever name called. 2)Destroy and disarm the current Army, Navy, Airforce, Police and all Intelligence agencies. Handover defence to a multinational force 3)Liberate Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and let it become a part of India as it always was. 4)All territory upto and including Karachi to be ceeded to India so that Pakistan has no sea port 5)Democratise the country by having internationally supervised elections every 4 years. 6)Change the country's constitution and law to reflect civilised laws.7)Make the country fully and truly secular

Stand United by Hindustani on 04 Dec 2008

Instead of maligning each others name, we should try to unite Hindustan to its pre-independence boundaries. This will stop all land and water related issues. Other issues can be taken up jointly. A divided Hindustan is being played by the Divide and Rule policy.

IS IT TRUE? by Abhinash on 04 Dec 2008

From where Indian Express get all these news? If Afghan told US than atleast we must have seen that here on US television. There is no news like this. Spreading rumers by a newspaper is the worst thing.

Show your might !!! by Rajan Sharma on 04 Dec 2008

This sis an opportunity with India to crush all terrorists across the border and inside the border. And if Indian Goverment does not encash this opportunity, I would prefer to call them impotent and I doubt if India has the capacity to take on the terrorist states.
