After Bush, Wen Jiabao gets shoe hurled at as protest

London In a throwback to the George Bush shoe-throwing incident, a protestor on Monday threw a shoe at Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao interrupting his speech at the Cambridge University in London.

The shoe thrown by a ‘young Western-looking man’ missed by a few feet the Chinese leader, whose visit to London has been marred by pro-Tibetan protests, the Times online reported.

Wen was nearing the end of his address on global economy when the man stood up, blew a whistle and shouted: "How can the university prostitute itself with this dictator? How can you listen to these lies?"

He then took off his shoe and threw it at the stage missing Wen by a few feet.

"Stand up and protest, you're not challenging him," he shouted in "European accent" before being bundled out of the room, the Times said.

The act of shoe-throwing as a mark of protest was first witnessed in Iraq in December last year when Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi threw his shoes at former US President George W Bush.

The journalist, whose attempts to hit Bush failed, was however arrested by security forces.

Following the incident, Wen said: "This despicable behaviour cannot stand in the way of friendship between China and the UK".

He was then ushered away by security personnel.

Wen's visit has been marred by anti-China protests in London, which saw around 50 pro-Tibetan demonstrators gather outside 10 Downing Street on Monday.

Five protestors were arrested after they held demonstrations on Sunday.

Freedom by Christopher on 12 Feb 2009

From history we see and learn that Freedom and Equality are most valued by people . Time and again the people have won after struggles and fights against tyrants , colonisers and repressive governments. Thus was USA , France,SouthAfrica,Kenya,Uganda,India and a host of other nations born into Freedom. It is an extremely usual and a very high-probability event. In waiting again are suppressed and bullied nations of Tibet , Eelam , Taiwan , Kurdistan and a host of other promising nations in the throes of birth pains before they too are born into Freedom .

People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people. by sharp.spirit on 04 Feb 2009

We should stand up not only to believers in governments but to to governments themselves. The nation state is dead. People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.

Shoe or shoo? by Hero Vaz on 04 Feb 2009

I suppose the shoe thrower was only trying to shoo away the Chinese PM !!!

Why do they always miss the target by rk on 03 Feb 2009

I think every self-respecting sho-thrower should first practise his art over and over again and only then attempt to do the real thing. After what China has done to Tibet, throwing a shoe is quite understandable, although Wen Jiabao may not personally be responsible for all of Tibet's problems

Agree with you by Surekha on 06 Feb 2009

Yes, practice makes a man perfect. Shoe throwers need to perfect in hitting the targets. While remembering Tibet, please also do not forget our own 16000 sq mile land including part of Kashmir-Aksai Chin, sacred Manas Sarovar etc under Chinese illegal occupation. We want it all back. No compromise on that. And China is talking about Arunachal just to divert us from the main issue !

Please be conscious by Alexander on 04 Feb 2009

you are talking about things you don't even know

see before you say by flycap on 04 Feb 2009

have u ever been to Tibet? If you haven't you don't have the right to attack.

Feces for Wen would be more appropriate by Sunil on 03 Feb 2009

please respect yourself as well as the others by jy on 04 Feb 2009

pls be respectful towards yourself, just at what you have posted, are you treating yourself as a decent person or just another despicable and vulgar shoe thrower, or maybe worse than that? furthermore, you have no right to comment on a great leader

Shoemakers, make heavier shoes by Surekha on 03 Feb 2009

I love this story. Indian leaders need to be careful, O'.

Shoe protest by Kulwant Singh on 03 Feb 2009

Shoes are being used as a protest. Hope our politicians also get such a treatment for all their misdeeds

Shoe throwing by R.Suresh on 03 Feb 2009

People who are throwing shoes are to be given exemplery punishment . Every leader has got their own problems and solutions. This is bad habit and need to be curbed in the beginning itself. Internationally let us decide to give capital punishment for shoe throwing, let us see who throws shoes. May be people will go to meetings without shoes soon.

It's a good idea by Kalidas M on 06 Feb 2009

In the current situation, this will create more employment for some sectors. The thrown shoes can be auctioned, like in Iraq, that's another way of looking at it. In one way, it is far better than shooting the hated guys down. Isn't it so?

are u crazy? by viksdes on 04 Feb 2009

are u crazy..capital punishment???ur a joke . stay in ur house, ur views are too short sighted

Bullet proof vs Shoe proof by Indian on 03 Feb 2009

not good action by Mike on 03 Feb 2009

I am living in China for last 5 years, I also worked in several other countries, just i could tell one sentence, I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE GOOD LEADERS LIKE CHINESE LEADERS IN WHOLE LIFE. These Chinese leaders, dedicated for the country, living for the country they also like to die for their country. the people whoever thrown the shoe to become fame is just useless fellows. their idea is just like Shit. Even they didnt know how to differentiate good and bad !! Throwing shoe on Bush is different than doing same to Mr. Wen Jiabao, today's economic crisis some of the caused by Bush, Bush god cold then all the world sneezing now. so deserved it, but not any of Chinese Leaders deserved it. I hope with other national and patriots to think a moment before taking any good or bad actions. I love China, I amd not Chinese but still I am happy to live in China, hope if I got another life, then i may born in China as Chinese. Mike

OK, Mike, now read this by Shashank Vagal on 05 Feb 2009

I accept Chinese leaders are good for their country. Every Indian will be overwhelmed by this fact because ours are not. And nothing wrong about it either. That is how the leaders (Chinese I mean) should be. Our concern is why are they unnecessarily raging secret / open war against India and not let us live peacefully? Why have they befriended Pakistan if not to make an evil nexus against us only? We do not have a culture for invading other countries, quite the contrary. It is their jelousy and sheer wickedness that started it all from 1962. Now, also, the same thing is evident because even though we took up economic reforms 20 years after them, we have made rapid strides and are challenging them in economic development, for sure. Why can't they stomach this fact and make it a fair play. It is not about the Chinese leaders being good to their people but them being hostile to our country that's what hurts and is to be looked at. Get it, Mike, my dear? Shoe throwing is one way of expressing the shit the thrower has in his mind towards the Chinese. You see? Helpless, peaceful Tibet was forcefully and cruelly attached by Chinese and if you don't accept this fact, then you are either blind or a fool. As regards the economic crisis who knows China has no hand in it by dumping their "cheap" products all over and causing unemployment? Chinese mind works that way, my fellow. When in China you may not see it because of obvious reasons, you have to look at it from a distance. Then the whole picture appears in full perspective. No comments on the Chinese students' input.

China and Parkistan by bluebaby0710 on 12 Feb 2009

i an a Chinese. i can understand u as i hate US to be on Taiwan's issue. but i want u to know something. When US started to punish China for the thing in 1989, they hold a meeting in the UN. No country spoke for China including North Korea, but the Parkistan. It is the only country in the world who never betrayed China in anything. If i have such a friend in my life, i would do anything for him or her.

Highly support you!! by Qianghua on 04 Feb 2009

That is one way to revive the dieing shoe industry.

Dishonouring one's own country! by Vinod on 03 Feb 2009

These acts of showing protests is an act of sham for the whole country! The people who do these things should know that these leaders come to their countries because they were invited and the onus is on the part of host citizens that they receive their guests! . The guy should have thrown the shoes at British officials for inviting the Chinese Premier. And, I don't know how morally strong the protester is, you will surely find a couple of chinese made goods in his house for sure! That is how the world functions, you speak something, but you act differently!

Humain rights by Hindusthani on 03 Feb 2009

Media's Fault by sunita on 03 Feb 2009

Go ahead, make hero's of dumb people and that is what you get. And wait, you guys are not far behind, that time is not far when shoes will be hurled at reporters and media people as well.Thats the legacy you guys started.

Where are the Commie rascals now? by Anmol Purohit on 02 Feb 2009

When an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at the US President, the Commie rascals of India were delirious with joy and jumping up and down. I hope they repeat their monkey-jumps now that the leader of their beloved nation, China, has had a shoe hurled at him. But... if only wishes were horses...The Commie rascals who have now virtually taken over the entire Indian English media, whether print or electronic, will either (1) come down like a ton of bricks on the man who threw a shoe at their beloved Prime Minister, or (2) maintain a monk-like silence over the entire affair. My guess is that at first they will attempt to shout at the protester and then suddenly they will clam up (on orders from their Chairman in China) and keep their mouths shut.Shameless, characterless, moronic, idiotic, fanatical, murderous, barbarian Commies, led by Prannoy Roy's brother-in-law Prakash Karat and Historic Blunderitis Jyoti Basu and an empty vessel called A.B. Bardhan.

Despicable is the occupation of Tibet and not that of the protester by S.Balakrishnan on 02 Feb 2009

The despicable act is in the Chinese refusing to grant autonomy to Tibet which they promised in return for India acknowledging Tibet to be part of China. The Chinese are violating human rights both inside China and in Tibet. The world must stop buying Chinese goods and show it solidarity with the Tibetan people.

Agreement by R.L.V. on 05 Feb 2009

Agree with you~~So, after a huge great wrold economic crisis, 1.3billion chinese can have their human rights because of the famine finally. Ops~which country will follow them~~~

See before say by Hao on 04 Feb 2009

I am quite astonished about the idiocy of those who support the shoe-thrower here. Before you type your words down, please search on the internet about the truth, about the reality of China, you have been shamefully deceived.

SHAME ON CHINA by Lobsang on 19 Feb 2009

IDIOCY? You are the one for not knowing the suffering of Tibetan people under brutal Chinese occupation.
