A mail recently sent through Dr K C Mohite's account is at the epicenter of this new confusion at the University campus. Dr Mohite is a senior professor and officer on special duty at the Board of College and University development (BCUD). The mail claiming that Dr Mohite is in trouble says, "Hello, I am sorry I didn't inform you about my traveling to Canada don't, have much time on the computer here, so I have to brief you my present situation, which requires your urgent response. Actually, I returned from Canada yesterday but unfortunately all my money got stolen at the hotel where I was putting up. I had been so restless since last night since I was without any money. Moreover the hotel’s telephone lines here got dissconnected by the robbers and the hotel people are trying to get them fixed."
"I have access to only emails at the library because my mobile cannot work here so I didn't bring it along. Please I want you to help me with money so please send me $1200, so that I can return back. I would refund it, as soon as I get home, I am so confused right now and don't know what to do, You can have it sent through western union but my passport is with the Embassy here so not sure if I can use my name to collect it now.
But you can send it directly to the western union manager here and I would get it through her, I have already spoken to her, so I will get it immediately its sent but let me know if you can help me then I will make findings. Please let me know, so that I can collect her full name and address, where you can send the money to today please.”
“Its really urgent for me as I don't know what to do right now than to leave at the earliest. You send it to me and I will pay you back immediately I get home. Thanks a lot for your kindness. I will really appreciate your quick response,”the mail adds.
This mail has spurred big confusion at the campus. When contacted the Vice Chancellors, Dr Narendra Jadhav explained the matter. "This is nothing but a fake mail. Actually, Dr Mohite is on Dubai visit. I have spoken to him and he is quite safe. He will return as per the programme of the visit,” confirmed Dr Jadhav.
Chief of the Information Technology committee of Maratha chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture, Deepak Shikarpur, solved the UoP mail mystery.
"This is a typical virus. It enters your mail account and selects the addresses from your address book. Then it automatically sends the pre-programmed mail to those addresses. Since, it replicates the original mail account, receiver could be cheated."
Unless the actual money transfer takes place, as per the cyber law, the complaint can't be launched. So creating awareness about such mails remains the only weapon to fight such mails.
