Jaipur, May 2: Speedster Shoaib Akhtar will not be allowed to participate in the Indian Premier League until the Pakistan Cricket Board lifts the five-year ban imposed on him for disciplinary violations, IPL chairman Lalit Modi said on Friday.

“Our stand is clear. We will adhere to domestic guidelines of any country’s board. A player can play only when his country clears him. He can play only when he is cleared and eligible to play for his country,” Modi told reporters in Jaipur.

Shoaib filed an appeal against the ban but even the Appellate Tribunal upheld the ban for now but allowed him to play anywhere outside Pakistan before the tribunal decides his final fate next month.

However, that has not helped the maverick pacer’s cause and he may now try to push for an early resumption of the hearing.

Meanwhile, Modi said he has been pleasantly surprised by the Rajasthan Royals’ winning streak in the IPL.

“It was worst on paper but captain and coach Shane Warne has worked hard and transformed it. I see it as the only team consisting of allrounders. Now they look like they can win the Cup,” said Modi who is also the President of Rajasthan Cricket Association.
