New Delhi, February 16: Describing Delhi as a city which imbibes all that is good in various cultures, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said everybody was welcome in the national capital.

"People are attracted to Delhi. It is here where the politics of the country shapes up and this is the city where new ideas develop. The Delhi government wants people to come here and we welcome them all," Patil said addressing the Delhi Police Raising Day function.

"The city imbibes all what is good in all cultures," Patil said.

Patil's statement assumes significance in the backdrop of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief Raj Thackeray's adverse remarks on migrants from North India and the subsequent violence in the western state.

Referring to the migration into Delhi, Patil said the population in the city has been increasing day-by-day and one could not expect a decline in the rate of this growth.

"Already, the city population has touched 1.4 crore and it is growing at a fast pace," he said, adding it has created some problems for the administration.

Patil said rise in vehicular population is creating problems in traffic management. "Traffic management has emerged as a major challenge which we have to take up seriously," he said.

Apparently referring to corruption in police, Patil said a minority among the police forces are influenced by ‘bad thoughts’, but 99 per cent of them are righteous persons.

Noting that the 2010 Commonwealth Games will be a challenge, he said police have to be equipped properly to handle the influx of a large number of people during the sporting event.

Invitation by Shivaraj Patil by Babuchandra on 17 Feb 2008

Shivraj Patil, is the biggest joker of the year! What he was doing when people from other states were attacked in his own state Maharashtra. Funny that he is inviting people to Delhi. This is the kind of politicans we have. How then India will improve under their leadership?

Delhi by K.K. Rao on 16 Feb 2008

This puppet Shivraj Patil now got balls to say all are welcome to Delhi. Where was he when Maharashtra was burning. And what's his point anyway ? People are welcome to stay/work where ever they want. But It seems now that North India is the only broad-minded region in the country. All these South, Maharastra, Bengal people have this tribal mentality to despise anybody who is not from their region. I have never witnessed any such feelings in North. Maybe some jokes on people's accent but nothing serious. And to some guy who keeps bringing Kashmiri's issue again and again here: Kashmir's issue are related to article 370, which your misguided uncle Nehru is responsible for. These Congress idiots have screwed up the country from the beginning...

Shivraj Patil invites by Vidyut Patil on 16 Feb 2008

Of course, Delhi belongs to no one. No one ever says "My native place is Delhi". It was the city into which refugees piled in after partition. Shouldn't Sheila Dikshit be the one inviting people? Shivraj Patil HAHAHA. Joker saala.

allarewelcome indelhi by kapildutt on 16 Feb 2008

shivraj patil has no buisness of inviting people to come to delhi when he did precious little to stop the exodus of northerners from mumbai. he should look after his own buisness of providing security to states reeling from naxalism for which he has failed miserably.it is high time when he should have honourably stepped down or should have been sacked unceremoniously.

DOUBLE DHOLDI by DEVENDRA THAKUR on 16 Feb 2008

This man is an outsider in Delhi so he can say outsiders are welcome. When Maharashtrians were butchering people from UP and Bihar, what was he doing, what was the PM doing, What was the CM of Maharashtra doing.

Wisdom on him has dawned too late ! by Sharad C. Misra on 16 Feb 2008

Patil has attained wisdom after the event. The nation needs from him an explanation as to why the Central Government dithered and delayed in taking against the MNS leader and allowed him to drive away 10000 North Indians from Maharashtra. The anti-North agitation would go down in history of Maharashtra as a back chapter. The massive exodus of North Indians has crippled the industries in Pune-Nasik belt resulting in loss of hundreds of crores of rupees due to closure of numerous factories employing North Indians and as well as sons-of-the soil.We look forward to Prime Minister to keep his words that such thoughtless violence against immigrants from any other State would not be allowed to be repeated in Maharashtra. Mumbai owes its development to Gujaratis, Sindhis, Marwaris, Parsis and the maligned 'bhaiyyas" from UP and Bihar. Drive them all out and Mumbai would be metamorphosed into a fishing village.

Delhi- A place to live by Dr.P.M.Rao on 16 Feb 2008

It is good to know that people are invited to Delhi to live from all over India. But in my opinion the facilities and conditions to live should be improved a lot at least in certain areas.
