Kolkata, January 23: Cooch Behar and Hoogly were on Wednesday declared bird flu hit, taking the number of affected districts in the state to nine even as authorities set a target of culling three lakh chicken daily.

Samples of chicken sent from Cooch Behar and Hooghly districts to the Highrisk Security Disease Laboratory (HSDL) in Bhopal yesterday tested positive," Animal Resources Development Minister Anisur Rahaman said.

"We have been informed by the Centre. Steps will be taken accordingly," he said.

"Steps are being taken to officially notify both Cooch Behar and Hooghly districts bird flu affected, for the next course of action including culling," Rahaman said.

The samples which tested positive were from Dinhata in Cooch Behar district and Balagarh in Hooghly district, he said.

There was, however, no case of humans beings being affected, the minister said.

The target of culling which was set at 20 lakh was also likely to increase, he said.

The daily target now was three lakh with 600 teams on the job from today, he said.

About 150 technical teams from eight states, including Haryana, Assam, Maharashtra, Orissa and Jharkhand would soon join to monitor the culling.

West Bengal's border with neighbouring states has already been sealed, the minister said.

CULLING IS A WASTE THAT CORRUPT BUSINESSMEN WILL NOT ACCEPT by garibsoor on 24 Jan 2008

Does anyone believe that culling chickens for free will be taken in good spirits in a country like India where people starve. Will the businesses absorb culling without any substantial reward. Who will guarantee that culling conducted by thousands of people will not expose them to the deadly virus, and this itself could promote further spread of virus. We should utilise our OWN brain to solve the problem by our own JUGADU ways. One option is to involve Bhaba atomic center so as to radiate these birds and then cull them in a traditional style. If the doses given can be precisely monitored, then may be the meat of such chicken could still be good for consumption, or at least better than the contaminated food that already sits on the shelves of supply chain for humans.

Bird flue and commies by Rajeev on 23 Jan 2008

It looks like the spread of virus is quite widespread and it went unreported for quite sometime. The commies are reporting it when it is going out of control. These commies simply dont have the infrastructure to contain the disease. This is because, apart from playing repressive politics, they have done nothing for WB. Its high time that people throw out this Commy virus which is more dangerous than avian virus.

WHO will take this initiative? by Dr. Ami on 23 Jan 2008

Communist Chicken by Ajay on 23 Jan 2008

Hey Commies... look at what your role models in China have done. They were able to eradicate houseflies and rats.. sure enough you can kill something bigger than that! but for that you have to work.. just criticising chickens won't solve the problem.

Useless communists by Sreenath on 23 Jan 2008

If the communists were paying more attention to governing than criticising BJP and congress, things would have been better. What do you expect from a bunch of arrogant leftists anyway? How come English TV channels are not saying anything? If it was Gujarat they would all be blowing their bugles by now!
