Kolkata, August 07 As CPM observed a bandh in Nandigram on Thursday following Wednesday’s murder of its cadre, another CPM cadre, Dulal Garu Das of Gakulnagar was allegedly shot dead by Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) men.

With Nandigram being awash with violence, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has called for an all-party meeting at Tamluk on Saturday to resolve the ongoing crisis.

Kuldip Singh, IG (Western Zone), along with the Superintendent of Police, East Mindapore, SS Panda, visited Nandigram and said the situation was under control. “Tension still prevails in some areas but police patrolling has been intensified to keep a check on the situation,” Singh said.

Ashok Guria, CPM district committee member of East Midnapore, meanwhile, alleged that Trinamool supporters had attacked the CPM cadre. According to him, outsiders have entered Nandigram in the last few days. They have attacked party workers at Sonachura and vandalised the houses of two party supporters, he alleged.

The Trinamool, on the other hand, also levelled fresh allegations against CPM. Abu Taher, saha-sabhapati of Nandigram Panchayat Samiti, alleged that the CPM has hired goons who are taking shelter at Garupara.

Taher also alleged that the CPM party supporters had kidnapped two Trinamool supporters on Thursday afternoon from Sonachura. But they were rescued and shifted to Tamluk hospital in the evening with severe injuries, he added.

In Kolkata, leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Partha Chatterjee said that the chief minister has called the all-party meeting on August 9, in spite of being aware of the fact that Trinamool Congress will observe it as Martyr’s Day.

Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to address a rally in Haldia on August 9, which was announced a month ago. Chatterjee alleged that the chief minister was not serious about restoring peace at Nandigram.

He wrote a letter to Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, demanding once again the deployment of CRPF at Nandigram. He also demanded the transfer of Debasish Chakraborty, Officer-in-Charge of Nandigram police station.

Biman Bose, CPM state secretary, said after winning the panchayat polls at Nandigram, the Trinamool should concentrate on developing the region. They should attend the all-party meeting.
