Melbourne In yet another attack on Indian students in Australia, a youth from the community was assaulted and robbed in Gold Coast, taking to 17 the number of such incidents within a month.

The attack which occurred last week came to light today when the victim identified as Sachin sent an e-mail to the Federation of Indian Students in Australia (FISA).

“I am a student of Southern Cross university TweedHeads Gold Coast. I have been attacked and robbed ... near Coolangatta police station,” he said in the e-mail.

“They took my money, ATM card, phone, gold chain. And I got five stitches on my face,” he said, adding a case has already been filed, but that he was “not satisfied” with the police action.

The student sought FISA's advice on what he should do next despite the Australian authorities vowing to provide maximum security to foreigners pursuing education here.

FISA founder Gautam Gupta said that they had been receiving five to seven such e-mails everyday wherein victims were seeking help.

“We have been receiving ... such e-mails everyday stating they have been robbed, bashed, verbally abused or thrown out of the house,” Gupta said. STUDENT-ATTACK 2 LAST Gupta said there was an urgent need for the Indian High Commission to build trust among students to directly report such incidents.

He said FISA was working with the High Commission in this regard.

Facing flak for the recent spate of attacks on Indian youths, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd yesterday pledged to provide “maximum” security to foreign students.

“Any assault against any person or any visitor to Australia or any international student is one assault too many,” Rudd told a visiting Indian media delegation here yesterday.

Attack on Indians in Australia by somesh ponmani/delhi on 26 Jun 2009

The Australians are more racists than the British. It all started with the humiliation suffered by the Australian cricket team against India. Added to this, the advancement of the Indian community in every field, has become the envy of every country in the world. There is no cure or medicine for JEALOUSY and the Australians are jealous of the Indians. Do not expect the Australian Government or Police to take action (otherwise, things would not have come to a pass like this). Just BOYCOTT Australian Universities and Australians in general. In the meantime, do not venture out alone and always let your friends and colleagues know where you are going. More the publicity, more the fodder for Australian hooligans.

You are SO right! by anna on 26 Jun 2009

Next time I come to India I shall remember your word: Indian police is going to help foreigner in the case indian boys are threating german girls ... Yes, yes the main bus station in Delhi is save. No men is laying hand on foreign girls/women or rubbing their hands between their legs to show what they want. And the indian police is of course all the time helping. Even in the case a rikshaw driver is trying to drive in the wrong direction with his foreign load. Yes, all sthis I shall remember - next time!

Just Go Home by codecorrector on 26 Jun 2009

Why don't Indians just go home to India. Australians don't like them so just go buy a ticket on Air India and go home. Nobody likes Indians invading their country.

Australia cannot take action. by Utpal on 26 Jun 2009

If the Indian student community and the Indian government think that the Australian government and Australian police will take will take action. That is never going to happen. The Australian law is very lenient with the criminals. Even if the police does manage to take them to court. There are strong chances that the criminals will be set free with a minor slap on the wrist. The police know about it and hence are not very enthusiastic about it. Better be more street smart. Move in groups, atleast two persons when stepping out of house. Carry objects that cannot be described as weapons, but can be used effectively to defend yourself. Like Umbrella, large size flash lights. If driving carry a steering wheel lock bar in the car. Believe me, I have managed to take care of few aggressive fellows. Just you holding something like that can discourage many of these criminals. But always exercise self restraint. Just because you have a weapon do not get tempted to use it like our punjabis.

Why are you living in Austrailia. by Zaki Murumkar on 26 Jun 2009

It is sad unfortunate but true.Aussies do not want indian students to stay or study in their country. The government and police take small superficial action just to show they are doing something. Its high time we indians understand that we are not welcome in Australia anymore more and move out from there.Parents should also understand its better to have a living and healthy child studying at home country rather then risk his/her life in a country where they are hating indians.I would say in most cases parents are responsible for letting their children stay and get beaten up in Australia.
