36-year-old Amrit Goyal, pursuing automotive engineering from the Australian Industrial System Institute here, was attacked in Laverton area, Amit Meghnani, President of Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA), said.
Goyal was attacked yesterday outside his house when a group of two men and a woman hurled racial abuses at him and also physically assaulted him.
"I was standing outside my home when two men and one woman approached me. They were shouting abuses at me... I asked them to calm down but they punched me in my left eye. I called the police but they came after an hour and a half. They said they were busy, and would come when they have the time.
They have recorded my statement and will ask detectives to probe," Goyal said. He said the group also threw a stone at him and kept on saying that he should go back to India. He said he has given the descriptions of the attackers to police.
The latest attack came 10 days after a 22-year-old Sikh was punched in his head by a group of Australians, who also removed his turban while he was sleeping at a bus stop here. Around 30 Indian students were attacked in various Australian cities from June to August.

Perhaps we should now realise after repeated attacks on Indian student, that it is not just the reaction out of proportion to their irrational behaviour inconsistent with Australian way of life. Having met many Australians I can swear that they have definite racist streak ingrained in them. Probably living at remote corner of the world makes them insular and intolerant. Live in Sydney Australia for the past 20 years (originally from Sri Lanka). Of course, you meet an odd Aussie who is not only frustrated with migrants but also with whole Australian way of life but most of them are fantastic. I see a huge different to the original Indian Migrants (skilled) to the students ( please don’t get me wrong for pointing this out as I welcome any migrant from open arms). The students generally tend to be very noisy in Public Transport , talk very loud in Hindi and have a care free attitude which annoys lots of people ( generally people here love to read or hear to music in Trains). In addition, the bargaining culture is quite repulsive to Aussies hence there are few right Wing Aussies capitalise this and pick on poor students. It’s a matter of getting used to the other is all. If the students are given a Aussie way of life before they come in this will help them immensely.

The good news is the percentage of attacks has reduced over the last 2 months but the incidence of attacks continue; I dont see the possibility of these attacks to cease because one cannot change the attitudes of the local australians overnight. Incidence of violence against foreigners in India does exist but statistically it is very very miniscule compared to the number of tourists or overseas visitors which india attracts. therefore, to oversimplify the occurance of crime against foreigners in india vis a visa attacks on indians in Australia would be just too prepostrous and ludicrous.

there have been different explanations by the Universities authorities and govt. officials of Australia and they visited India consecutively to allay the fears of racial attacks. Reports also came out that the media is over-exaggerating the incidents of sporadic scuffles which are coloured as racial.
