New Delhi The HRD Ministry has suspended National Institutes of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirapalli Director M Chidamabram on allegations of misconduct and defiance of the decisions of the Board of Governors. Prof M Chidambaram has been asked to return to IIT Madras where he was a faculty member before being appointed NIT Director.

Incidentally, he is the second NIT Director to be suspended in a little over a month. NIT Warangal director Y V Rao was suspended last month following a series of charges ranging from discrepancies in admissions to inadequate civil work construction at the campus .

The suspension orders follow inquiry reports on charges against the NIT Directors submitted to the ministry. HRD ministry sources said that there were charges of administrative misconduct against the NIT Tiruchirapalli Director.

“I have not even been told what the charges are. I was just sent an online letter saying I stand suspended. The Board of Governors has been against me for a while ... The BoG also works on very casteist lines and have cast all kinds of aspersions against me. I intend to go to court to challenge my suspension,” Prof Chidamabaram told The Indian Express over telephone.

NIT Kurukshetra director by Rahul on 30 Jul 2011

Same Case with NIT kurukshetra, here director is going mad and he is like a dictator for us. MHRD if you are listening do something to save the NIT kurukshetra's students life. He is making the college hell.

Keep it in perspective by Preeti on 16 Sep 2010

This is an institution not some kind of cult! Students should be able to voice their criticisms freely for the development of the institute else others outside will think nothing is wrong and the students batch after batch will be mired in the same problems. Many of the staff themselves have a discord with the director. Funds are there but where is all the money going? that is the crux of the problem. The director may not be responsible and may even be a honest man but it is he who is responsible for the corruption underneath him.

Get things right! by Cyril on 16 Sep 2010

Seems like we do not recieve the funding we are actually entitled to. Which library built in the 2010 doesn't have A/C specially in a hot place like Trichy. The roads are messed. There is no drinking water in the hostels. So actually even if the Director didn't launder money or whatever the charges are, he DESERVES to be sacked for not looking into the issues. He is not getting paid for simply sitting in the room and drinking tea and having samosas on the dot.

NITT to IITM by Arun on 14 Sep 2010

NITT Going to loss its status because of useless politics between the people who all are inside the campus. No one can sustain without fraudulent activities. That is the reason for all......

Perspective by anonymous on 14 Sep 2010

Any Institution cannot satisfy the student or staffs 100%. Depending on the funding the infrastructure can vary. Any student would try to defend his institution in front of others to hold its reputation although there may be difference of opinion inside. However it is very very strange in NITT. Hence it is natural for the staff to defend. I think the whole situation has arisen and reputation has been spoiled by some unknown elements. I would never let off my alma mater under any circumstances.

don act childish by arvind vi on 14 Sep 2010

for both staff and students. This is a public portal. The students havin personal grievance for any reason shudnt voice it in public when the allegations havent been proven. As to staff, i commend ur support but demeaning the students is demeaning the director cos he is responsible for them. So bear it in mind in future. Whatever may be the allegations he is a renowned professor of a good stature. So give him the respect he deserves.

voice from NITT staff by NITT staff on 13 Sep 2010

Dont worry Prof. Chidambaram. Difficulties come in your path to make your triumph more effective...

Ranks?? Eh! by NITT Dude on 13 Sep 2010

Under his tenure NITT has come down from a ranking of 6-7 to around 14-15. Rankings are an indian obsession and it will surely have an impact on how the institution is seen by the general public. good that the director is gone. we need people like manisundaram sir. not like this guy.

u dont know the facts dear by nadeem on 05 Oct 2010

what do students know?no experience.no exposure,no attitude no info., nointerpreting capability, no managerial skills, just out of school, into college -u think u can just like that comment on everything under the sun?go study for urself ur family and ur own future.dont waste time n such matters which ur absolutely unaware of!

hi by Ravi on 11 Sep 2010

long live corruption

Dont worry Prof by Jebas on 10 Sep 2010

The silly comments made by the students of NITT are surprising. They will understand when they go out of NITT, see various colleges and institutions and compare them with theirs(NITT). Dear Prof. Chidambaram, dont worry, truth will prevail one day, and good people will always be with you.

Students by NITT on 10 Sep 2010

For the students who blame Prof Chidambaram. He has never taken any strong action against any student who did various mischief fearing spoiling students life. Students can drink, smoke, come at any time, view pornography is it discipline? I think suspension is too cruel to Dr Chidambaram for non corruption offences. If it is justified then every student should be suspended for lack of attendence, misbehaviour etc.

for your information by Faculty on 14 Sep 2010

Of course Prof. Chidambaram did not take much serious disciplinary actions against petty mischief of students for the reason that it would ruin their studies. But he never failed to take actions for serious issues (few) of misconduct. Believing strongly that such students can be corrected through proper guidance and counseling, he arranged for counseling through appropriate persons and also through external counselor.

Where is this going by A worried student on 16 Sep 2010

This is a research institute and not a disciplinary school. How many profs drink and smoke and how does it in any way relate to the research going on within. One prof of academic repute is even rumored to beat his wife after drinking..if it were true will any action be taken against him? of course not because it is 'private' issue! This should not be an autocratic regime! The students should not be seen as kids but as the adults they are.Such strange rules are not there in any foreign institutions or IIT's but they are one of the top contributers in research work?Take for eg the reusable cello-tape from IITk-How many inventions like that have come out of NITT? NITT doesnt even feature in the 1000 world institutes because of these practises!.Dont console yourselves by comparing with other 3rd rate institutions within India-Aim for the stars and atleast you will land on the moon. The complaint here is Where is all the money going? and if the person in-charge doesnt know then he might as well be sacked.

Smells of settling scores by Kumar on 10 Sep 2010

This is a ridiculous and insensible way of dealing with anyone in that position. Moreover, Dr. Chidambaram is known to be a selfless and hardworking person with good intentions for the institute as well as his students. We have people in this country who have done heinous crimes for whom a formal procedure is strictly followed even if it means spending crores of rupees - and here is an academician, known to be generous and down-to-earth in his professional circle, who is being meted out this treatment. Wherever there is praise, there is criticism and therefore not surprising. Whatever may be the criticism, Dr. Chidambaram certainly does not deserve this treatment. I hope some sense prevails and an inquiry committee is formed if they truly have any allegations.

NITT to IITM by Student on 10 Sep 2010

The director was very ambitious. He always wanted to make NITT an IIT. That is next to impossible? ->IITB internet is funded by Verizon. They have internet in every room. There was a huge strike which nearly set an alarm across the nation for not providing internet for 6 hours. Let us not talk about our college with respect to this. ->NITT like an IITM? That's far far away! Make students wear boxers and shorts to classes and lab exams. ->Degree will be pulled off for wearing Tshirts. Isn't that a bit ridiculous. I agree some rules are not formed by the director. Pheraps the administration itself is faulty. MHRD must look into this immediately. Having infrastructure with no foundation and facilities to support is more like a jail for the students.

Good riddance by ankur on 10 Sep 2010

I thought i would make a rant on the lack of facilities here but saw most of it was already made though the pitiful internet facilities deserve a mention. Students have to make do with around 10kbps(effective) connection with no internet services like wifi or lan in the hostels. Research work, internship letters, foreign placement letters, conducting events etc have become a pain. And the only reason he gives is he thinks students would get spoilt and do badly in exams due to internet. While institutes like IIts are making waves in the scientific community with pioneering research and new inventions here he is worried that students would get 'spoilt' with the only tool which can push forward research. He has pushed forward the making of many new buildings(like the grand library) but all lack severely in facilities. What use is an unfurnished house?

good decision by Robb on 10 Sep 2010

Finally a step in the right direction for NITT..when we complained about the bad quality of mess food and lack of water in the hostels he asked us to fix the problems ourselves!he rejected all our requests to go on Industrial Visits. In four years we have gone on only 1 I.V thanks to him while other colleges go at least twice a month. Other professors keep complaining on how he beat down allocating funds for crucial lab-equipments resulting in overcrowded labs with up to 5 students doing a single experiment on faulty apparatus. Further absurd curfew timings(7pm)are imposed on girls hampering their participation in brain-storming sessions or taking part in projects or even accessing crucial computer facilities(OCTA and Internet Lab) or eating at canteens outside the hostels making life miserable for them. Also the sports facilities have gone downhill with the swimming pool and tennis court going out of commission. The Library too has become an inside joke. And he wants to know why!

The Chairman who does not mind... by karthik on 10 Sep 2010

It seems the Chairman NITT Mr R.Seshasayee is not serious about NITT at all. Based on his recommendations, the MHRD has suspended NIT Director Dr Chidambaram. However, the suspension order is not based on the report of the independent and impartial enquiry committee report. The Board itself seemed to have decided this, without a proper independent enquiry committee. Principles of natural justice have been thrown to air by Mr Seshasayee. More than that, Dr Chidambaram is asked to join duty at IIT where he has been working before. Now he is out of NITT and no more an employee of NITT.So NITT can not conduct an enquiry, nor can it take action against an IIT Professor. In effect he is not suspended, but he has been let loose. NITT is affected. Any body in NITT knows that for the last five years under Mr.Seshasayee there has been no growth and only politics going on. He has been constantly tormenting the Director. But the truth will triumph ultimately. But the chairman does not mind this

personal vendetta by sophia on 10 Sep 2010

remember IAS officer's suspension carried out in haste and the reinduction.it seems like its being enacted again.no charge sheet.no show cause notice served.why this after smooth running of affairs for the past 5plus years.what was the board doing these 5 years/whose interests are being served?enquiry should be done by an individual agency regarding appointments, extensions, and other matters.

Well Deserved: Excellent Board Decision by NIT_WELLWISHER on 10 Sep 2010

NITT director was one of the worst Directors and has pulled down NITT from a premium position to an average college. He is very autocratic and certainly not fit for the position. Now we can hope NITT to get back to its old glory . Hats off to the board of directors to suspend him though he has just a month to retire. Good Lesson Taught

Vengence by verumul on 10 Sep 2010

He is not corrupt. There are people who eat crores of rupees and sit in chair. He has spent his life in developing the institute. Just one month left for his tenure and for silly reasons they have suspended. We dont understand what are the charges whether an enquiry committee has submitted the report. It is very very painful to say that a person who even does not siphon Govt money will not last long in the chair. I am sure there will not be any further development of NIT Trichy further. NIT Trichy staff

deserves by pk. on 10 Sep 2010

still remember wat he said... wen he was asked bout the bad quality of mess food... he replied dat ... u ppl r unlucky ones n u hav 2 face it...n now he bcomes IT. he always tried a bad 'copy' of IITM in NITT. gud job BoG. its high time to refresh d system.

Mr. by another student on 09 Sep 2010

Me and all my friends are happy he got suspended, as it is the best way to humiliate a hypocrite like him. His vision was to bring NITT to IIT standards, by building empty buildings which lack all facilities, and deprive its students of basic amenities like good food, drinking water, internet and protection from wild cows. I'm quite sure he has pocketed a lot of money by leasing out the 10MBPS internet line which we never got, and by not refunding the balance mess advance, plus all funds released for improving and maintaining college facilities which were never exactly done. Backup power is given to the streetlights, and empty departments, and not the hostels. One new generator was setup, but never turned on. The swimming pool was never open for the past 2 years. The tennis court is a joke. Library is not well equipped with enough books, and stays closed after 5pm. More concentration was given on lifeless buildings than actual quality of life and education of students.

from another NITT student by Justice on 13 Sep 2010

Think twice before u make comments. he always worked for the welfare of students. brought all the facilities for us. the saddest part is that he always supported students and because of this he got bad name among others. have you ever went near the swimming pool? just go and see. it is only bcos of the hard work of director, that swimming pool is open to students and other staff and it has been functioning very well for the past one and a half year. dont just make allegations, step into the system and see. ur allegations are baseless just like swimming pool complaint. those who want to know the truth come to NITT and see it in person

great step.... by ravi on 09 Sep 2010

this director was a racist. north indian students were torcherd under his tenure.....

thank god by xyz on 09 Sep 2010

Finally NITT will be a better place for everyone!!!

nitt by student on 09 Sep 2010

well for all the people sympathising with him the truth is he was a really stubborn person and refused to ever consider the welfare of either the students or the faculty. merely comissioning the construction of buildings doesnt make him the ideal director!!!
