Pune, December 31 In Pune, eight prominent hospitals are providing emergency medical services (EMS) through nine ambulances and seven rapid rescue units (two wheelers). The Talera family recently donated one EMS ambulance to Pune Heart Brigade in the memory of Pramod Talera. This 10th ambulance was formally handed over to Joshi Hospital of the Maharashtra Medical Foundation on Sunday.

Founded in 1999, the Pune Heart Brigade (PHB) recently completed eight years of EMS. It was in 1999 when Arun Kudale, member of Rotary Club of Pune South, leading the Rotary International District 3130 as Governor learnt about EMS and its need. Soon, the Pune Heart Brigade’ was formed as a public charitable trust. It came into being in August 1999 as a service project.

“It’s quite an expensive task to set up a service like the EMS. The families of two of trustees, Arun Kudale and Rajabhau Chitale, donated one-fully equipped ambulance each. Dr Dhananjay Kelkar and Dr Prasad Rajhans came forward to take up the challenge of providing EMS service. Thus, PHB could launch its EMS at the Sanjeevan Hospital. This has been the first EMS launched by an NGO in India,” stated a press note.

“The Pune Heart Brigade has been recognised for its pioneering work. The size of this project has crossed Rs 70 lakh. This effort has helped over 17500 lives so far. In order to make it easy to contact PHB in medical emergencies, the PHB rigorously followed up the government officials and a dedicated number 105 was obtained. This is like 911 in USA. This was changed to 1050 in 2004,” added the press note.
