New Delhi, March 27 In the second incident of its kind this year, a construction labourer working on a new runway at the Indira Gandhi International Airport lost his life on Thursday.

In February, a labourer had lost his life when he fell from a crane.

Jamuna Ram, 30, a resident of Hazaribagh in Jharkhand, was run over by a road roller truck around noon. The roadroller’s driver reportedly could not see Jamuna working, the police said.

Jamuna was rushed to the Safdarjung Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. A team of Delhi Police visited the spot and have started investigations.

The police have registered a case of “causing death due to rash and negligent driving” against the driver of the roadroller who managed to flee after the accident.

On February 14, labourer Bahadur Alam had lost his life at the same construction site. He was on a crane and fell from a height of 25 feet. After protests by other labourers and Alam’s family members, the police registered a case but since there were no names in the FIR, they could not make any arrests.

Last year, on October 22, Deccan Aviation technician Sanskriti Sinha was found dead on the tarmac after being run over by an unidentified vehicle.

The Delhi International Airport Limited claims that 90 per cent work on the runway is over and that it will be completed by July. The runway is expected to be fully functional by August.
