Melbourne Racial attacks on Indian students spread to South Australia with a 22-year-old being allegedly assaulted by a teenager in Adelaide after making "rude" comments about his turban, even as the state premier warned he will not tolerate any form of racism.

Police said the Indian student suffered a broken nose and sore jaw in the incident in Adelaide's busy market area of Rundle Mall on Thursday and that they have arrested a 17-year-old youth in this connection.

The attacker has been bailed to appear in the Adelaide Youth Court.

A bystander said he saw the Indian student punching first, but the student claimed that his attacker started the spat when he hit him on his turban and asked "what's that on your head?"

The student, whose requested anonymity, was walking through a local mall with friends when he heard a commotion behind him, local media reported.

The spate of racial attacks against Indians spread to Adelaide, capital city of South Australia, after members of the community were targeted in Melbourne and Sydney.

South Australian Premier Mike Rann described the attack as a "disgrace" and said the state has been welcoming migrants and students from around the world for many years.

"We are seen internationally as one of the safest and most supportive multicultural communities. We will not tolerate any form of racism," Rann said.

The Indian student said the attacker started a confrontation by making "rude comments" about his turban.

Asked if he thought the attack was racially motivated, the student said he had never felt it was a problem in Adelaide. "But what would you call this?"

However, he said it "would not change his attitude to Adelaide as a good place to live and study."

In another incident in Adelaide, Pakistani student Yasir Raja, 26, believes his Holden Commodore was torched because of its "Raja" numberplate.

Raja said friends living in the Enfield area had increased security around their homes in fear of racist Raja said he had felt safe since he moved to Adelaide four years ago, he was worried recent racist attacks interstate could encourage similar incidents here.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has decided to convene a round table to discuss the attacks on June 28. State Further Education Minister Michael O'Brien said the Government had established a task force to investigate ways to improve the experience of foreign students.

South Australia's student population is more than 27,700 and by 2014 the Government plans to increase the number to 62,000. International education is worth more than USD 740 million annually to the state and is the fourth largest export industry.

Face Racism ? Dont go to Australia . Simple as that. If you can tolerate racism and dislike your own Country then stay there without whining. The Indians that go to Australia under desperate conditions dislike the same India which is making a ruckus over them getting their rears whooped. See this student after having himself roughed still wants to live in Australia. Some honour ? If I was in his place Id come back home and never go back to such a place again. Things is the Indians who are willing to go to foreign countries like Aus, Dubai or UK at any conditions dont even deserve to be called Indians . They are stateless losers who hate their own soil . Its a lesson learnt for this Gentleman

Attacks on Indian by Goupal Rai on 22 Jan 2010

It is sad that racism exists in Australia which is supposed to be more civilized when compared to our Hindustan. But pray why a Hindustani should go all the way to Australia for studies when the fact is that this country has since centuries been the "BEST" for education. Be it moral,Character , Historical, Science, Astrology or any for that matter. OK you went to study there than why not only study and not look beyond it . No one has ever been successful in "eating the cake and taking it home too"?

Are Indians racist? by Joe Rossi on 13 Jan 2010

Does it mean that Indians are racist because of the various kidnapping, rapes and murders carried out against Australian tourists while travelling in India?

Mrs by Korinne Parker on 09 Jan 2010

I am a white Australian and I live in Melbourne. I am deeply sorry for what has been going on in my country, in my city. Australians are not all racists but a good too many of them are. Racism and bigotry is ugly in whatever form it takes and should be condemned.

Racialist exist India/ world news by Tom on 17 Sep 2009

some form of racial abuse has been seen among weaker section of the society on day to day bases, there has been no one to raise the voice for the weaker section. when things happen in isolation and no one is bothered because it does not affect the integrity among their society and if they happen to raise voice they are looked down both on political point and on the society and it takes ages to decide if its right or wrong and the person fighting for the cause dies/feels lets down before the case can be solved and given final verdict because of the stigma attached to all the social systems created by some idiotic elders of higher cast/higher income group as if its their given birth right or a written down policy which has to be practiced and transcended from decadency. It is much visible among some of the semi rural and upcoming cities and rural areas and among all the society the morality among people have been lost and the school have developed their own way of training people for soc

racial attack? NO WAy! only on PR hungry punjab by ajay on 04 Jul 2009

One more thing! i am Indian and me and my wife are living here for the past five years. we never faced any problem here. Aussies are so nice and caring that i don't think that they are racist. I have lots of Aussie friends and it's obvious that you get the same behavior what you do with others problem is with those who are fooling around. They are not here for study actually. Ppl from Punjab are coming here for study but never seen them doing a good job. Just taxi drivers or distributing papers or advertisements on flinder street station. Pls don't spoil our reputation. Our Govt should stop these ppl from spreading all our the world.

racial attack? NO WAy by ajay on 04 Jul 2009

more than 200,000 Indians are living in Australia but they never complaint before! only Punjab have problem as their main motto is not the study. just getting PR. because of these so called "student cum PR hungry ppl" genuine Indians are facing problems! wherever we go, we face problems because of this "Punjab". They have simple ambition " just reach abroad by hooks or kooks" I have traveled almost all over the world and i found that these Punjab ppl represent Indians! even in Malaysia. Shame!

Indian punches first = another racist attack? by Sick of lying Indians on 22 Jun 2009

So the Indian throws the first punch, after being asked a question, which may or may not have been intended as an insult AND YOU A'HOLES CALL IT A RACIST ATTACK??? In reality, Indian racist behaviour is making these sort of people most unwelcome in Australia. The idiot himself admits Adelaide is not racist, but oh - he felt upset, offended and decided to start a fight, which he predictably lost. One single incident in South Australia, and the whole state is now "racist". No wonder there is so much violence and discrimination in India. I get now why you send people here to get an education, coz obviously the system in your country doesn't work at all...

India becareful by James on 19 Jun 2009

The India community in Australia should learn how to behave in anther's man land India are calling Australia a racist country i think they should first check their country before calling Australia a raciest country in new Delhi and Mumbai I have come across many African been kill heavy beating across the country. And in south Africa we are living with then peacefully In Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Puchong yesterday a group of Local Malaysia India Attack some few African student and they kill one of then the local authority did not even do anything.Australia has responded with a 10-point action plan to help safeguard students. A helpline has also been set up.So what India are doing to other people in their country they get it back 100% somewhere so they should not cry or call Australia a racist country if they cannot adapt with Au life style they should go back to India.

Miss by Lauren on 17 Jun 2009

Hey look people get beaten and robbed around the world. It's a fact of life that in the economic recession more people will be beaten and robbed for MONEY NOT BECAUSE OF RACE. Seriously I can't believe this has become such a big issue. Australian's, Chinese, Russian's, African's etc are beaten and robbed everyday across the world but you don't see them blaming it on racism! Like several people have already said, this has been blown way out of proportion and I don't see why this should make any impact on the number of Indian's coming to Australia to study. Australia has some of the finest educational institutions in the world so come on over mates!

beat the hell out these indians by Shyam Kumar on 17 Jun 2009

Indians themselves are to be blamed for the attacks happening in australia. Hundreds of Indians are beaten up and bullied every day in india in the name of religion, language, state etc. So, aussies, please beat the hell out those indians.

Blame gae? by Tushar on 17 Jun 2009

well shivakumar.. do you live in australia or have u face any such miserable attacks which have been trailed on indian students... Dont you think it might cause students in india from premier instituion to choose australia as one of the countries for higher studies.

To Warne - the humble Aussie by Indian in Aus on 16 Jun 2009

Warne, Indians have all the differences - agreed. North vs South, Tamils vs Hindis, Biharis vs Marathis, etc, etc. Remember onething. India obtained independence only 61 years ago and before your British "Lords" we lived harmonious lives. Study some Indian history mate. I suggest you watch 'The Story of India' by an englishman, Michael Wood (available in abc shops). You will know how Indians had a golden past even amidst all the moghul rulers. It is "YOU" the Poms who raped and pillaged her. Even after that we are friendly to so-called United Kingdom. Give India some time. I'm sure all the western world will be screaming behind her in a long queue.

Blame game by Shivakumar on 15 Jun 2009

I think Indians have no right to blame aussies for the attack on Indian students considering the number of Indian students getting beaten up in India in the name of religion, caste, language etc

Who is racist? by Warne on 15 Jun 2009

I am happy that many Australians are posting comments on this issue. Indians are trhinking that they are smart and keep writing that Indians are most sought after breed to run big organizations. Just rubbish and it only shows that Indians are just selfish and not bothered about thier own struggling citizens. Have they ever made to think about south Indians blaming North Indians as racist? The imposition of Hindi on non-Hindi speaking people. Very recently the India too supported the racist regime in the ethenic clensing of Tamils in lanka. No North Indian even ever tried to find out the feelings of South Indian tamil. All these are not racist? Indians are basically racist and they do not realise until they are out of India. Delhi always use a Keralite to handle tamil issue, is it not racist? look at your own house before complain about your neighbour. Once you are out of India, you are no greater than Tamils in Srilanka.

Reply to Fayah by Indian in Aus on 15 Jun 2009

Yes Fayah. This is typical. You guys say, "This is us (me) and if you like it stick around, otherwise get out of here". You deny the possibility of co-existence, the very reason why the divorce rates and broken relationships are sky-rocketting in the western countries. And the kids who are affected become low-life racists on the streets just like these. Think about the earth, the lonely planet and think about co-existing amongst all races. Adjust like we did in the past.

Critisizing Australians ONLY because they are not Vote Bank by Chor on 14 Jun 2009

You blaming Australians for Racial Attacks? Why not blaming Kashmeeri Muslims for killing Kashmeeri Pandits and driving them out of the valley? Why you still allow city names like Aurangabad - which means long live aurangzeb - the killer of Hindus? But blaming Australians just cos those poor people cant come here and vote - Chor

Racial? by Ganesh on 14 Jun 2009

India is the biggest racist country in the world and north Indians are the worst racists anyone could come across. It is a joke that these racists are getting attacked in Australia. North Indian students speak in Hindi when among Australians and start to giggle and make fun which irritates any Australian. So they get beaten. Let them get beaten. North Indians should be taught how to behave first in a foreign country. Because of these idiots even South Indians are getting a bad name. And the irresponsible Indian media is blowing the issue out of proportion.
