New Delhi, July 3: Woman archer Reena Kumari on Thursday cried foul after losing on an Olympic berth to Dola Banerjee and V Pranitha in selection trials and demanded one more chance to prove her potential before the next month's Beijing Games.

Reena also lashed out at the selection committee and questioned the authenticity of trials conducted by the Archery Association of India to judge the candidates for the two Olympic berths.

"The selection procedure is wrong. There is no transparency in the selection trials. All decisions and everything else is being done by (AAI General Secretary) Paras Mukherjee. Archery revolves round him, he is the sole authority," she said.

"Now that Pranitha has been selected, what is the guarantee that she will do well in the Olympics, there is no tournament before the Olympics, so how will you judge her. I want that there should be another trial or else I should be taken back in the team. If this time I can't then I would say ok perhaps, I am not good enough," she added.

The archer said she was asked to appear for the trials even though she had the best ranking after the third leg of World Cup in Antalya, Turkey, along with Dola, who had even failed to make the cut, finishing 67 in that international competition.

"Although the team did not do well, I had the best rank of 28, while Dola finished 67 but still I was asked to appear in a trial on June 25 along with Dola for the Olympic berth," she said.

Reena said she had consistently performed in selection trials and also did well in the Turkey World Cup, whereas Dola had been struggling with her form but AAI was testing her (Reena) time and again alongwith others for the final Olympic berth.

"My rankings were sixth, first, first and fifth in the four selection trails respectively. I also performed best at Turkey, where as Dola had a ranking of 41 and 59 at the first and second leg of the world cup.

"Moreover, after the selection trail at Meerut between May 1-4, she and Bombayla were kept aside and trial was held. In Turkey, she was 67th. I want to know why this discrepancy," she said.

The Railway archer also lambasted the last selection trial and said, "Earlier trials were of eight rounds with a 70m distance but in this trial there were 16 rounds. Why there was this change of rules this time. If it had been eight rounds I would have surely made it, I was leading in the eight round."

Reena said she did not have prior knowledge that she would have to appear in a selection trial in June and it was only after she came back from Turkey that she was informed.

"After we landed in Mumbai on June 2, I got to know that I have to again appear in a selection trial along with Dola. Confused, I called up Paras Mukherjee but he said he did not know and I should ask the (AAI) President V K Malhotra. I then wrote a letter to the President mentioning in details about the ranking and everything but it all fell in deaf ears," she said.

However, general secretary Paras Mukherjee said that Reena never had any significant international performance and the selection trail was very open and fair.

"It was an open trail where Reena finished fifth. She never had any international performance. She does not have any business. No archer has complained in this four days of the final trail," he said.

On why another trial was held after the Turkey World Cup, Mukherjee said, "After the third leg of the world cup we decided to go for another trial since our women team did not do well at that tournament. The president said we should conduct another trial by June 30 so that we can send the best team for the Olympics."

Asked why Dola and Bombayla were kept out of the May 9-10 selection trial in Kolkata, he said, "Our thinktank decided that taking into consideration the reputation and contribution of Dola and the performance of Bombayla, they need to be given time to prepare, so they were kept out."

On why there were 16 rounds in this final trial compared to eight in the earlier trials, he said, "We wanted to put them under tough conditions to ensure that the best only can qualify."

Mukherjee said he was confident that V Pranitha would do well at the Olympics and serve the game for a long time.

"I have seen Pranitha very closely. I think she can serve the game for atleast 10 years," he said.
