Armaan Ebrahim, one of India’s top Rotomax karting drivers for a long time (multiple champion), has just finished among the top 3 in the Formula Renault V6 Asia Series, with five top place finishes, two second place and two third place finishes.
This success has caught the eye of one of the top racing teams of the world, the UK-based David Price Racing team, and he has been signed up for the GP2 Asia series for this year.
Akbar Ebrahim, his father, who also runs a racing academy, said today that this elevation for Armaan would be more than just that.
“This is actually a route that has been followed by many international champions who have finally made it to the Formula One grade. Hence, Aarman will be up in the spotlight for spotters.
“Moreover,” said Akbar, “the technical specifications of this car are no different from the cars that are used in Europe. Hence the accent on this Asia series is now as strong as it is in the European circuit.”
What this translates into is that—and specifically with the sponsorship scene for top champions in India being pretty good—Armaan, at 18, has a rather big opportunity to push into the elite league, quite like Karun Chandhok has been able to.
“It is a great opportunity for me,” Armaan said. “There are possibilities in this and I believe the structured approach in India has a big role in this.” JK Tyre has been organising racing in much of the country, stressing on the youth, and even on the not so economically advanced segments of society in a sport that needs the moolah by the bucketfuls around the world.
David Price is a respected name in moroting circles. It is a pretty old team, and have handled many Formula One drivers in the past.
“We had a call from London, and we went and had a long chat,” said Akbar.
“Like my wins in Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Japan and Zuhai last year, I look forward to add Dubai and Bahrain in my portfolio of winning nations,” Armaan said.
The GP 2 Asia series has a 10-race programme, featuring a maximum 26 cars and the visibility that Armaan gets from this—like it was in the case of Karun—will help him monve up the ladder.
In everybody’s sight, of course is Force India, Vijay Mallya’s own Formula One team that will be on the grid this season, and 2010, when Indian is expected to host a race.
David Price, head of the David Price team, has said: “The whole concept of the Asian GP2 series was to help promote drivers from different areas, and I am extremely pleased that DPR have secured the services of one of the most promising young talents.”
The special attributes of Armaan have been his natural aggression, coupled with the race-craft that he has gained through several races in this country and abroad.
Italian sponsor to boot
Strange are the ways of sponsorship around the world. If Armaan Ebrahim is a top shot race driver, one would expect him to be sponsored by a company that manufactures allied items. In fact, many do, like JK Tyre, Amaron, ELF Lubricants, Speed etc. But now even an Italian shoe company has come forward to sponsor this youngster. Baldinini is a formal shoe company and it adds that international touch to it all.
