Nanda, his son Sanjeev, who is an accused in the BMW hit-and-run case, chartered accountant Bipin Shah and Deputy Director of Income Tax Ashutosh Verma were produced before designated CBI judge I K Kochar who remanded them to CBI custody till March 14.
The four were arrested in Mumbai on Saturday night and were produced before Additional Session Judge in Mumbai who had sent them on a transit remand in New Delhi.
Earlier, the CBI counsel sought a 10-day custody of the accused to unearth details in the case.
The counsel said the accused had to be confronted with various documents seized during the raids at different places after their arrest. They also had to be questioned on the recovery of Rs 55 lakh from Shah's residence.
The CBI alleged that the accused made contradictory statements during interrogation about the purpose of their meeting at a hotel in Mumbai. It also alleged that Verma had taken a room in the hotel with a fake identity of Shakti Verma.
Suresh Nanda's counsel claimed that the accused has been arrested to humiliate him as the CBI had recently been rapped by the Supreme Court for seizing his passport without any ground.
The counsel for Sanjeev claimed that he was arrested just because he was with his father during the alleged meeting and said that the CBI recovered nothing from him.
Verma's lawyer also opposed his remand saying that the accounts books which were alleged to have been fudged were in fact submitted to the higher authorities on February 22, much before his arrest.
Similarly, Shah's counsel argued that the money allegedly recovered from him had come from sale of farm land.
I really do not know if getting commission in a deal from a firm for a dealer is a crime.If firm pays some percentage to its dealer and dealer pays income tax on that,has the dealer committed any crime.If he has not paid taxes he should be charged under income tax act.All car dealers give incentives to the customers in the form of accessories,insurance cover or discount coupons.Will these also come under kickbacks?On the question of bribing govt officials,these people demand money even to touch a file leave alone processing.Politicians seek money for questions,Judges for favourable verdicts,CBI is no holy cow,Police for even lodging FIR.Buck does not seem to stopping.It can be said with confidence that nothing will happen and Nandas will get bail and verdict in their favour.
It is irony of fate that no accused ever confesses his or her crime. It is only after the long, unwieldy legal process that the accused are finally booked and awarded punishment.
