Srinagar An Army Major and three soldiers were killed and another was injured in a fierce gun battle in the dense forests of North Kashmir’s Hafradu forests. The operation is still in progress.

Defense spokesman Lt Col J S Brar said that on Saturday afternoon troops of 1 para and 6 Rashtriya Rifles launched a search operation in the Hafradu forests of Kupwara district. “As the Army jawans were closing towards the militant hideout, the militants fired on the Army’s advance party resulting in the killing of an army Major and three soldiers, another soldier was also injured in the firing,” he said.

The Major has been identified as Major Mohit of Parachute regiment.

Brar said the encounter is still going on in the forests. “We don’t know how many militants have been killed as the operation still continues,” he said. “There is possibility that militants might have taken shelter in the natural caves.”

Since Friday, this is the third encounter that has taken place in the Kupwara district; so far army has killed four militants, three in Drangyari and one in Shamsabari encounters. Army said that a search operation is still going on in the Drangyari as army fears presence of more militants in the area.

Army is also trying to establish link between the three encounters. Officials also have not ruled out the possibility of some militants sneaking into the Valley some days ago from the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. The area where these encounters took place is close to the Line of Control. In the past, militants had been using these dense forests as transit points. “We are trying to establish whether there is any link between these three encounters. The picture will get clear once the troops will return from the forests,” Brar said.

No More Sacrifices !! by Rajan Sharma on 23 Mar 2009

India has lost many patriots in Kashmir. It is surprizing that our government is waiting for nothing. The government is not ready to allow the Army to take over completely. Once the Army is fighting the terrorists, they should be allowed to take decisions without questioning and we all will see the results within no time. The combination of Government and Army is not goiung to bring any results and we are seeing it. Once handed over to Army fully, Kashmir will be back to normalcy. If few of innocents have to suffer and sacrifice, they must. Why only Army has to suffer and sacrifice all the time??

Pathetic Politics by rao on 23 Mar 2009

The news that US is asking India to reduce troops on the Pak border (apparently since they want Pak troops to be available on Afganistan for their war against terror) is condemnable. If this is true, I will rate US as the most supportive nation for "Terrorists". We all know how Pak's state operators help terrorists - their army provides cover by resporting to firing at Indian posts, so that the terrorists can smuggle into India. It has always been Pak's policy especially when major events (like Elections) now take take place to resort to sedning terrorists into the country. It is laughable that US treats this as accepted norm, since their main target is ont Afganistan and they feel that terrorists should be allowed into India and Pak given all lee-way to accommodate its request for sending terrorists to India. Of course, less said the better on our weak-kneed Govt's part. Will the killed army personnel get the same recognition as the policemen killed in Mumbai encouter. I doubt.

Militants changing approach by Praful Daptardar on 23 Mar 2009

It takes lot of efforts to train and bring to the rank of Major. The militancy must be crushed at any cost. Use hight tech equipments. Get the training from Israiel who have experties. Ask DRDO to have researcha and use laser guided equipment to detect human movement and finish of these militants. it is shame that Indian economy is growing at around 7%, lots of fund are available for development and military. Use funds effectively. Give ultimatun to the head of Army , Navy and Airwing to finish off the militacy. Corrupt politicians are busy making more and more money and this will not change in near future. For God's sake save the precious lives of our soldiers. They should not fall prey to coward militants. They will prefer to die in an open war with our enemies but not by hands of coward militants. Dear Prime minister please look in to this seriously. You are the only hope for all of us.

Pathetic Politics by Rao on 23 Mar 2009

My first reaction to this article is what thankless job our Jawans are doing for the country. Any minor mistake - like the recent one where allegedly the Jawans fired on civilians (which I am sure there would be some reason, as to why they had to fire - either the so called Civilians may have had something to do with terrorists or a genuine mistake by our troops), every one went ga-ga over the issue and ensured that the Jwans got the raw deal. It is our stupid politicians' stand that the Army has to go and check with anyone (who holds an AK-47) whether he has any intentions to create terror and only if he says "yes", you can take action notwithstadning the fact that such a fellow may keep his gun on the Army personnel's head (and shoot him too) but the Army should not take action, since the so called idiotic human rights activists and poiliticians are there to cry foul.

Kashmir Problem by Anand Mujumdar on 23 Mar 2009

Make Kashmir independent along with sending 50% of Muslims of India to Kashmir along Mulayam Singh Yadav, Arjun singh and others. Kashmir is not worth owning it.

Why? by Mat on 23 Mar 2009

Why cant we have more force multipliers for the jawans and officers on the ground. There is so much variety available now. It could prevent the death of our brave soldiers. All the money is not equal to life of a single jawan/officer.

OMAR ABDULLAH by yyutsu on 23 Mar 2009

Now where is OMAR ABDULLAH. where is P Chidambram. when suspected militants were ki@lled he cried from the top of the roof and Kashmiris were taking out processions. Now Army Personnel have died .Will OMAR GO TO Pakistan or he will find these people in Kashmir only who ki@lled these army personnel.IF HE CANT DO THIS HE HAS NO RIGHT TO DO WHAT HE IS TRYING TO DO FOR POLITICAL GAINS.

God save the country! by Anurag on 22 Mar 2009

Omar Abdullah and the human right-wallahs screamed from their rooftops when a few days ago some civilians got killed in army firing. Will we hear some criticism of Islamist terrorists, or at least condolences for the army soldiers and officer(s) from these people now? You bet not! All the tender emotions are reserved for the ones who are bent on breaking the country. What the army gets is just brickbats. God save the country!

Kashmir Army losses by D.A.Eswar on 22 Mar 2009

Cant UPA take up with Pakisthan this type of killing of our army personnel ? Manmohan Singh and Sonia instead of giving speeches they should save lives of our army and people. Voters should teach a lesson by defeating UPA parties including Congress.

Burden on Indis by Dee on 22 Mar 2009

It is shameful that young people of India are dying and Kashmiris are still not ready to mingle with India. India should leave this piece of land and better focus on saving Jammu's Hindus and Laddakh's Budhist. let these stupid people die their Sharis's death. Rather send all the Indian Pakistanis there- they can't mingle. They are psychics who will do anything for their Saudi's Masters.

The unfinished agenda of partition is to expel the 200milliion muslims living in India illegally because they got their Pakistan and Bangladesh on religion grounds. You guys are hypocrites.
