Jammu Army is all set to equip its special forces with Global Positioning System (GPS) wrist watches to help them in operations against militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

With the aim of giving special forces a technological edge over militants, Northern command headquarters had recently floated tenders for the purchase of high-tech multi-utility GPS wrist watches, defence sources said.

In the first phase, 120 such GPS watches would be procured for special forces and sealed bids – both technical and commercial have been invited from the bidders in this regard.

Dozens of GPS devices have been recovered from infiltrating militants during encounters along the Line of Control (LoC) during the past year, they said.

"Militants are frequently using GPS devices for infiltration and reaching their guides along LoC. The watches are used by militants for navigation", the sources said.

GPS watches for what; by Shahid on 26 Oct 2009

Troops need GPS watches for what ?? To know where they are and how they can reach back home. Thats it... ! The bad guys, terrorists, also need it for the same purpose. Specially when they need to run for their life not knowing where they are and where to go... ; Is this what you all want also... ?? Maybe it is in vogue nowadays to wear a brand name watch, specially if it has a GPS also..

Simply disgusting---- by romesh.sharma on 26 Oct 2009

Such news coming from higher authorities of Defence, that too with proud,is more than shockingly disgusting.Such a great Army, the second largest in the World, and such great nation now trying to equip few commando with GPS watches which is already being used in almost every World Army and even terrorists. To precure mere 120 GPS-watches they need so many formalities and sure will take another few years. The usual " TO BE AND MAY BE"!Not even once heard/read any action claiming that this and that has been done.No country will leak such intended plans and are absolutely secrets but its only those who feel inferior and weak try such propaganda to convince own masses and give a try to find higher place among world powerful/well equiped Armies. Moreover using GPS of USAmerican version makes India more dependent on US,they can(had done before)switch on and off whenever it suits them. For this system like most other required modernisation of Army India must get into joint Ventures with Russia.

Pathetic by Karthick on 26 Oct 2009

For whom is this news? by arun kumar on 26 Oct 2009

Army is short of officers and it may take about 20 years to fulfill all vacancies, Same is story of Police forces, and Judges. We may be a country of 1 billion but do not have quality man power otherwise these vacancies should have long been fulfilled. GPS watches or modernisation of army is not a matter of public interest but of strategic importance. By this IE wants to give the message that how sensitive is out Govt. in modernising our armed forces and really concerned about our security? Good trick to defend a non performing Government but one question why our plans are Pakistan and terrorist oriented only? What about our preparedness vis a vis China?

Big by Aseem on 26 Oct 2009

I think our army needs to come with something big now as the country's sovereignity is under question.Over the years our defence leaders have come up with some big defence deals but nothing has been done to improve our intelligence.
