'Arrogant' UPA won’t be able to run the Govt: BJP

Sushma swaraj

New Delhi The BJP accused the UPA government of basking in the "arrogance of power" and asked it to shed such attitude.

To drive home its point, the party cited increase in petroleum prices, a Congress MP slapping a bank manager and a union minister's attempt to influence a judge as examples.

"I see a common thread in the developments of the last three days where arrogance of power has been shown vehemently by the government. And it has influenced all three organs of the government," Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj told reporters.

Defining the increase in petrol and diesel prices as "contemptuous attitude" of the government towards Parliament, Swaraj said it has violated "parliamentary propriety" by taking this step on the eve of the Budget session.

"A minister takes permission from the Speaker and then tells the House the reasons for increase in prices. This is a violation of parliamentary propriety, an insult to Parliament and betrayal of the common man," she said.

She accused the previous UPA government of decreasing the prices prior to the Lok Sabha elections to lure voters. Swaraj warned the Congress that if it continued with its "arrogant attitude," it would not be able to run the government.

Correction... by Chandra SG on 03 Jul 2009

I think i need to correct the thought process of few 'economists' between.. us... who are blaming that BJP should give more constructive criticism... etc..Sushma said that the price rise in the petrol is done in an unparliamentary way.. w/o allowing for proper discussion.. in parliament. This amounts to high handed / arrogant behaviour... of the Govt.I'm not saying that Govt. should not rise prices... but I'm pointing out that ours is a parliamentary democracy... were legistaion/ decisions are passed through parliament after proper discussion.Fortunately, Parliament is not Congress party meeting room... Where PM presides.... but Madam decides.. I think BJP criticised this arrogant and high-handed behavious of Congress party. All those 'economists' and shame-less congress supporters... god help you ..all... so tht some sense and logic will prevail on you guys..!

unfortunate...! by Chandra SG on 03 Jul 2009

I think few people criticizing BJP for playing the role of responsible opposition is unfortunate and it only exposes their adulation for Congress (summarily Nehru-Gandhi family).Yes, unlike Congress.. BJP is not dependent on any family for running its affairs.. It is normal that one will see.. dissidence in any democratic institution (it can be your own family..) But discipline is utmost for keeping the image of such institution high. Today, BJP is alone the most democratic party which is not centred around a family or an individual.Congress - Nehru-Gandhi familyTDP - NTR familyRJD - Lalu Yadav (Individual)Shiv Sena - Thackrey FamilyNCP - Sharad Pawar (Individual)DMK - Karunanidhi familyNC - Farooq Abdullah FamilySAD - Prakash Singh Badal FamilyBJD - Patnaik FamilyAIADMK - Jayalalitha (Individual)BSP - Mayawati (Individual)Yes .. Left parties alone are not dependent (although till LS elections Karat Family... were dominant) but they are out-dated party

ARROGANT _ WHO ? by ARPrabhakar on 03 Jul 2009

I hope Sushma Swaraj does not suffer from the disease of ' selective' memory loss? Remember Ms Sushma, when your Govt came to power for the second time after the 13 days stint, your Govts first job was a hefty rise in petroleum products, so why talk wolf now? No Govt would like to burden its citizens of unnecessary price rise, if it is not absolutely necessary. From about $ 45 per barrel a few months back, it is $ 70 per barrel. Has the prices of crude been increased by India? If some things are not in our control, then that is the price we will have to pay.

Arrogance of power by Vaid S C K on 03 Jul 2009

It is childish to blame BJP for crticizing Ruling party simply for the reason that there is infighting in its party. Does it mean that BJP should stop playing role of good opposition party? Though it is fact that refineries are making heavy losses, why the government does not make comprehensive analysis including high taxes charged by State government and cascading effect of many wrong policies. It is duty of government to look into all aspects and not through political lense.

Arrogance of UPA by Rajesh Vyas on 03 Jul 2009

Thank god we do not have to suffer the KING OF ARROGANCE and the media's favourite --In fact creation of the Media---Mr. Laloo Prasad Yadav. Now that he is out of power, how about proceeding with the various alleged serious crimes!!!!

I am amazed by Sundar on 03 Jul 2009

I am amazed at how even educated people can be stoop so low. If they want to support UPA let them go and lick Sonia's whatever. For such people anything that BJP does or say is rubbish. Go and lick Sonia's especially people like Divyesh Raythatha,Bashishth Narayan Verma.

Answer to Dr. Chor by arun kumar on 03 Jul 2009

I think your name suggests your profession which needs no schooling. Nobody is against increase in price. This could have been brought before parliament. In democracy parliament is supreme power and not Congress party.Clear?

POLITICAL ARROGANCE by NIRANJAN on 03 Jul 2009

IT IS TRUE THAT EVERY TIME A PARTY GETS A GOOD MAJORITY IN A STATE OR AT CENTER, THERE IS AN AIR OF ARROGANCE IN ITS BEHAVIOUR. THE PRIME EXAMPLE IS MAYAWATI. WE HAVE NOT SEEN THE LIKES OF HER ARROGANCE EVER. ON THE OTHER HAND, WHEN BJP ASSUMED POWER, IT WASN'T MUCH DIFFERENT. SO INSTEAD OF CRITICIZING THE RULING PARTY, BJP SHOULD FIRST TRY TO GET ITS HOUSE IN ORDER AND WISH AND HOPE THAT IT DOES NOT GET THE SAME DISEASE WHEN IT ASSUMES POWER IN FUTURE.

Jab apne ghar seesay key ho to doosrey key gahr pey pathhar nahi phektey by Bashishth Narayan Verma on 03 Jul 2009

The party which itself is on the verge of break up is saying UPA government arrogant. Instead BJP should immediately short out its infighting problem, otherwise days are not too far when this party will found gasping.

Cheap politicians with .... by Edwin on 03 Jul 2009

How can any Indian expect good, honest and sincere behaviour from our Politicians, who ever he may be, when they use Crores/Millions of rupees to get elected from the people? All off our politicians are not from middle classes, but they are from multimillionair families, how can we ever expect service to common man. They think only to get back the money they have spent in the elections. So what is the SOLUTION, PLEASE STOP GIVING IMPORTANCE TO THESE RASCALS....

ARROGANT, SHAMELESS BJP LEADERS by Divyesh Raythatha on 03 Jul 2009

People of India are very well aware that who is arrogant and who is lier. The language used by BJP leaders is so low that an average person gets offensed. Before elections and even after elections, the cheap ahd uncivilised language used by them is known to eveybody. One of the major reason of BJP defeat in elections is this. It is surprising that Sushma is talking about arrogance of leaders in the overnment is the meanness and the height of lowlessness of BJP and particularly Sushma. It would be in the interest of BJP if they stop making FOOLISH statements and damaging further the leftover (if any) reputation of BJP. I hope Sushma remembers that Advani has been apologising for his substandard language used in election meetiongs immediately after results of elections. Now, Sushma night apologise for the above statement. It is the BJP style.

Arrogance and Power by Giri Girishankar on 03 Jul 2009

Don't expect the governing party to shed its arrogance and become humble just by asking for it. Arrogance will certainly lead to erroneous steps. If and when people's lives are affected by such steps, the arrogant politicians will come to know immediately. They will ignore people's protests at the risk of their own peril. Congress politicians are not going to listen to the protestations of the BJP leaders at this time.On the other hand, the opposition should take the arrogant misdeeds of the governing party to the people and explain how they (the people) have been taken for granted and/or deceived. Congress's actions that have been cited by Ms. Swaraj are indeed in a spirit of disrespect and disregard for the people.Arrogant behavior is not just the monopoly of the Congress Party. Power encourages such behavior. Politicians in general should always be conscious of the fact thet they are there to serve the people and cannot take their position for granted for ever.

Making Mountain of Mole Hill by THDSINGH on 03 Jul 2009

The cases cited by the Deputy Leader of Opposition accusing certain individuals for the misdeed are no doubt a cause for concern by all law abiding citizen, however, generalizing it as a Government policy does not rhyme with reality. It is hard to please everyone, but, the Government, no matter it is run by BJP or Congress has certain fiscal responsibility. In today's most volatile financial world when the price of oil is changing daily, it is hard to keep lid on prices without creating unbalanced deficit that may hurt us. On January 19, 09 crude oil was $34.78. On Friday, it closed at $68.44, a virtual doubling in only four and a half months. This has nothing to do with election in India. How much price was raised or should have been raised by the Government on petroleum products, no doubt, involves politics among other things including its effects on common people. It would have been constructive criticism if BJP would have given an alternative views. I am apolitical.

Arrogant UPA by A.Dias on 02 Jul 2009

I am not BJP nor Congress supporter but what is happening such as influencing the judge and slapping a Bank Manager are the effects of corrupt politics. Just apologizing the Bank Manager, the MP must not go scot free. He must get the punishment. Similarly the case of Minister influencing the Judge, must be brought to justice and must be punished. Politicians must remember that their olden days looting the country and fooling the people are coming to an end

Oil price has been low since close to six months now by Anil on 02 Jul 2009

Why ioncrease price after the election that too without debating it in parliament..And why influence judgeswhy slap bank managers

Consensus should be the Mantra. by A on 02 Jul 2009

sir,Raising the petroleum prices on the eve of parliament session is an insult to the parliament. Consensus should be developed on all key issue if the government wants to run smmothly.Otherwise the euphoria will be evaporated within no time as happened during the regime of Smt.Indira Gandhi. After she won more than two third majority after Garibi Hatao polls of 1971 her popularity came down at the lowest ebb within two years after she nationalised the wholesale trade of food grains. This lesson should not be forgotten by the present rulers.

Can u provide something constructive rather than just trying to say say u could do better. We have your rule in our state and guess what we have been deprieved of eating meat! Thanks to your rule of govt. If your leaders would share in that pool of money which was supposed to be given to the so called dalits, undoubtedly u wouldnt slap the manager. Its understood.
