kolkata, April 22 Members of the Forum of Artistes, Cultural Activists and Intellectuals met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Tuesday to protest against the recent incidents of violence in Nandigram in which CPM cadres allegedly raped a woman.

Artist Subhaprasanna, theatre director Bibhash Chakra-barty, poet Tarun Sanyal and educationist Miratun Nahar met Gandhi and expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal .

“We met the victim yesterday and are convinced that the most gruesome atrocities had been unleashed on her by the CPM cadres. The medical report may claim otherwise. But we do not have any faith on it. All evidence have been erased and they are only twisting the truth. We cannot expect them to come up and own up,” said Subhaprasanna.

The forum also expressed its apprehension that the violence will only worsen with the onset of panchayat elections.

“The panchayat elections are of utmost importance but can there be a democratic process like an election when there is a complete breakdown of law and order. We are apprehensive of the violence it will bring with it,” the artistes said. President of the forum, Tarun Sanyal, also urged the Governor to deploy military in case the need arises. “When things went out of hand in Park Circus on November 21, the Army was brought in. They should be called in if the need again arises. We have no faith in the police,” he said.

They said that the Governor gave them a patient hearing and have assured them of doing the needful. “The Governor is well aware of the goings on at the ground level,” Subhaprasanna added.
