Arunachal boundary is illegal, angry China tells India

Arunachal

Beijing, November 11: China on Tuesday angrily rejected India's assertion that Arunachal Pradesh is its integral part, insisting that Beijing never recognised the ‘illegal’ McMahon Line and that the status of the border state was ‘never officially demarcated’.

Deeply regretting External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement that Arunachal Pradesh was part of India, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said New Delhi has not taken into account the ‘historical facts’.

"We deeply regret the Indian side's remarks, that take no regard of the historical facts," Qin said when asked to comment on Mukherjee's comments on Sunday in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh that the state was an integral part of India and that China was "aware" of it.

"China and India have never officially settled demarcation of borders, and China's stance on the eastern section of China-India borders is consistent and clear-cut," Qin said at a regular bi-weekly news briefing.

"The current Chinese government, as well as previous ones, has never recognised the illegal "McMahon Line," the official Xinhua news agency quoted Qin as saying.

"India knows this," Qin said, referring to the McMahon Line, the demarcation line drawn on map referred to the Shimla Convention in 1914. Although China disputes its legal status, the McMahon Line is currently the effective boundary between China and India.

Mukherjee had also said that "China is often making claims on Arunachal Pradesh, but Arunachal Pradesh has a special place in our heart."

"People of Arunachal Pradesh regularly elect two representatives to the Lok Sabha and there is an elected state assembly carrying out the responsibility of administration like any of other 27 states. The question of parting company of Arunachal or any of its part does not arise," he had said.

As for the pending boundary issue between China and India, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said that China is willing to find a solution, which is "fair, reasonable and acceptable" to the two sides, through peaceful and friendly negotiation in the spirit of mutual understanding and adjustment.

Mukherjee's rejection of the Chinese claim on Arunachal Pradesh follows recent declaration of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a visit to the state that Arunachal was 'our land of rising sun'.

This is the second time within a week that Beijing has reacted sharply to Mukherjee's remarks on China.

On November 7, China had rejected an apparent 'China threat' remark made by him during a speech.

India says China is illegally occupying 43,180 sq kms of Jammu and Kashmir including 5,180 sq km illegally ceded to Beijing by Islamabad under the Sino-Pakistan boundary agreement in 1963. On the other hand, China accuses India of possessing some 90,000 sq km of Chinese territory, mostly in Arunachal Pradesh.

Arunachal disputations by Harihar das on 13 Nov 2008

Esteemed sirThe sino-indian position in Arunachal Pradesh has more to do with disputation for disputation sake putting spanner on indias progress. When the people of the state stayed put in india without any complaint for years together it is futile on the part of the dragon to gulp its territory on the basis of nuanced history chine shares without sharing the opinion of the people of Arunachal. China wants to keep powder dry over it specialy to check mate the country for making competition. Even they disputed the success of Chandrayan-1.

India-China border by Dharitri Chakravartty on 12 Nov 2008

Whether China accepts or not, McMohan line has been internationally accepted boundary between India and China. And in the 21st century whene no country can survive on its own, it is better that the internationally recognized demarcation of borders be accepted as it is in favour of all concerned. Most importantly, it is the human concern which should be taken into priority account. The Arunachali people want to be part of India and it should be the most important thing. China can not and should not talk or think of 'Chinese Imperialism' in this modern age. India must boost the infrastructure connectivity of Arunachal to send the strong signal that McMohan line must be respected and historical decisons must be respected in order to maintain peace and prosperity in the region. This superficial Hindi-Chini bhai bhai slogan iused by China is meant for fooling an emotional India. There must be strategic plan on Indian side to counter China not militarily but with other means.

India's Strong Leadership by Rishikesh R Shirke on 12 Nov 2008

India has again shown its mild and late concern over Arunachal as it was during Nehru Regime For what India is waiting china agression .For past we have counter Chiness army patrols into our own land. Our communist nationlist have none of concern .their stance is same as it was same in 1960 if it rained in moscow or in bejing commnist open thier umbrella. All we can wait is Americas sympaty.

God spare our land from distruction by Gurumart on 12 Nov 2008

Indira Gandhi was killed by the people who were meant to protect her. We have members of our Army (meant to defend us), planting bombs to kill our sons and daughters. We are busy killing each other in the name of religion and language. Our political parties belligerently defend the terrorists who shed innocent blood. We encourage the rise of religious, fanatical political groups bathing our land from North to south - east to west in blood. We are a nation divided on numerous issues. We are divided on religion, language, cast and on creed. Our enemies are using our division to gain inroads. We are allowing them to do so. Let us stop blaming China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Let us correct our own attitude. We are running out of time. You can make the difference. May God enlighten you

Chinese Hedgemony by Mahesh Patel on 12 Nov 2008

Chinese wanted our support for Olympic Games and we gave them. They wanted our support for their rule in Tibet and we gave them. We do not say anything when Chinese lay claim on Tiwan. We are just a nation that believe that by appeasing Chinese they'll come around and won't attack us in Arunchal pradesh or elsewhere. We were wrong in 1962 and we are dead wrong now. Only language Chienese understand is power. We should be strong from military stand point and be prepared to fight them when occassion arises. WE should have our infrastructure strong along all borders and we should be always alert on our borders. We should not support China on any of their political position on Tiubet or any other issue. They should come begging to us and not otherway around. That is "powe"r that Chinese recognize. WE SHOULD NEVER COMPROMISE ON BORDER ISSUES. If China teaches us their history to claim our borders, we should give them some of our history lessons too.

China's Clam by Pasuathy on 12 Nov 2008

It is futile to imagine that any other Country will side with us in the event of a conflict with China. In 2012 China will celeberate the 50 th anniversary of humiliating India to the merriment of our neighbours in the west and east. In what form they will do so has to be perceived and counter measures must be taken without any further loss of time. None of the political parties in the opposition or the temporary allies of the ruling party are raising the issue of defence preparedness in the Parliament. Chinese agenda of spreading from Pashupathy( Nepal) to Tirupathy ( down south in India ) may not be a mere imagination! Nepal is already more or less in their pocket. In 1962 apart from total unpreparedness of our Armed forces by way of equipment and infrastructure, the morale of the Army was low thanks to the overbearing VKK Menon and beuracracy. Let us hope that History does not repeat itself. I Suggest compulsory readng of the book " Himalayan Blunder" by every one in Min of Def.

Learn from mistakes by Baatul on 12 Nov 2008

I think Mukherjee has done the right thing. For long, India has always been reacting after someone says something untoward about India. It always pays to be the ATTACKER than being the DEFENDER. Its started from the Muslim onslaught from the North West and continued with British colonization. Hottest properties in Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai still remains with the Churches. Whatever has happened are bygones. But we must learn from it and act accordingly.

Use Aksai Chin to keep Chinese away in other areas by Ajay Date on 12 Nov 2008

Carrot and Stick does not work with China. India should keep pressure on China for returning AksaiChin. Aksai Chin is the only front on which China can be pushed to keep the North East safe. Also it is high time the government recongnize that the North East should be integrated with the rest of the country in a much stronger and broader way - may be all govt, railways and public sector jobs for next one year should be reserved for those from NE.

Right on the dot by Shashank Vagal on 05 Feb 2009

You are absolutley right. 100% correct. It is Chinese policy to divert us from reclaiming the occupied land in the first place by bringing out claims on newer and newer areas. Congress is no match to BD, Paki; so what can we expect from them about China? Somehow wandering sheep Nepal seems to have realised it's mistake, it's a relief.

Let Money Talk by Prem on 12 Nov 2008

history books of China should be scrutinized of false claims made therein. Most of all do not buy anything made in China and that a direct way to send a message.

Chinese claim on Arunachal Pradesh by Sanjeev Verma on 12 Nov 2008

Chinese have slowly started showing their true colours. Hats off to George Fernandes for recognising this threat much earlier, for which he was ridiculed by one and all incl the media. It should serve as a wake-up call to the Govt to pull its socks up and get ready for another showdown with the so called Hindi-Chini bhai-bhai.

China in illegal occpation of Tibet by Deepak on 12 Nov 2008

China can give back Tibet to Tibetans and Tibet can act as a buffer between China and India as it did for centuries till 1950s.

India should declare Tibet is free contry by KunderS on 12 Nov 2008

this govt is all messed-up. If we say Tibet is a free country then these chinees understand what is the offical status of Arunachal. Our insance govt always tries to please china. I don't know why?

Untrustworthy Dragon by LAYogi on 12 Nov 2008

Just how many times, Indians will trust Chinese when repeatedly trust is trashed in UN, during Nucllear waiver, Arunachal. Yechuri/Karat should be sent to China and Chinese should not be allowed to put car plant in Calcutta. We know for sure our IT firms are in loss in China, just where are we profitable in China and if not why get ourselves kicked every time. Chinese are hopefully not so stupid to attack India but we should not be trusting them anymore. Tibet, Taiwan, HongKong, Meeyanmar and now Arunachal and may be Nepal. Dragon ios vicious No Gandhian Philosophy will work here!

Our failed China policy by Natarajan on 12 Nov 2008

China has time and again proved that it will go back on the word given to Indian negotiators. How do you engage with such people? You have to understand their objective and psyche. China is an imperialistic country. It wants to gobble up Tibet, Taiwan, and any place that is populated by Chinese looking people. Its rationale is that 100 yrs ago or 400 yrs ago, certain piece of land belonged to the Qin dynasty.. and since PRC (Peoples Republic of China) is a successor to the Qin dynasty by its own proclamation, it wants all those land. How can you rationally talk to these guys and make them understand that boundaries between various states have constantly been changing throghout history and we have to look at the current position of the boundary. The best way to tackle the Chinese is to go back on our words by way of Parliamentary resolution that Tibet is a seperate country. Proclaim Dalai Lama to be the President of Tibet. Use human rights as a weapon against China.

Arunachal claim of Chinese by P Setra on 12 Nov 2008

How far back are they planning to refer to may be when all the continents were together, which later on broke apart and formed different coninents. And what about Tibet? Why did India recognise Chinese occupation, when whole of the world did not? India must withdraw that recognition. If India does recognize , Then why does Tibet have government in exile? Nowhere else but in INDIA?

Yeah we draw it on our map.. so? by Indian in US on 11 Nov 2008

Just ask the people of Arunachal Pradesh what they want.... and honor their wish. Most NE states in India are nothing but large garrisons and we siphon of their natural resources and give almost nothing in return..... Bunch of Garrison states and ONGC platforms. I'm not saying it should be given over to China. It takes moral courage to look at our faults. People maketh a nation not its land.

Status of Arunachal Pradesh by Rajeev Verma on 11 Nov 2008

are our politicians, bureucrats bold enough on this issue, and is our Military strong enough to defend from China - everybody knows both are equally incapable, and the politicians and bureaucrats are so corrupt to the core that Military is simply lacking in terms of hardware required for defence or offence - all the armament is in bad shape because even a general in army is nobody in front of a petty babu in the secretariat, the red tape has grown too big after so called 1947 independence. People have not got freedom - only the rulers have changed from Gora to Brown saabs, the tactics have remained same, cruelty same, corruption and extortion has increased many times, even the supreme court judge had to say - "only god can save India", but when God is not in India, who will save that country - it has already gone to DOGS.

Arunachal boundary is illegal by Jagannathan on 11 Nov 2008

what kind of an imperialism is, it ,my dear Comrades. When India proposes a joint naval excercie with America you totally opposes it. I remind the Communists and their fellow travellers that Only JF.kennedy thretened China in 1962 that he would priovide air umbrella ad then only the Chineese stopped. After all USA never laid claim on Indian territory. In the next parliament sesion you will face very many emabrrassing time

Greed by Bhimsen on 11 Nov 2008

I doubt whether China has $600 bn to bail out her financial institutions. Chinese are just trying to rob the world in the name of buying peace. Their greed is bottomless. Today Arunachal tomorrow Assam, Nagaland. These people should be given a kick in the ass and they deserve it.

China is a threat to the world by n.krishna on 11 Nov 2008

India should develop full nuclear deterrent to counter Chinese threat or work for democracy and disintegration of China. Boycott all Chinese products including their filthy toys, and melamine tainted chocolates.

China's Claim by K.V.Shriram on 11 Nov 2008

India got it's independence and also partitioned in the year 1947 and then declared its states and borders aftermath, Founding of the Peoples Republic of China was in the year 1949, so once a solid democratic nation 'India' comes into existance with the will of people of the land and the will of the god, nothing or no force can change it for good. The chinese should ask the people of Arunachal Pradesh "India" weather they are happy here and wait for their answers. Any force will not work as the chinese know it very well and understand that such an attempt will only push both Nation's towards war and Hell.

chinese aggression by kk on 11 Nov 2008

Arunachal PardeshI do not understand the indian government. this problem has been going on for a while and the chinese keep harassing. it is time india took a firm stand and tell them in the same language that keep hands off and return the other occupied land or otherwise we are going to reduce the trade which is in chinese favour. the chinese are very cunning and like to frighten india. i am sure india is much stronger now than in 1962 war. this way india can take the revenge and the land. i know it is not going to be easy
