Arunachal boundary is illegal, angry China tells India

Arunachal

Beijing, November 11: China on Tuesday angrily rejected India's assertion that Arunachal Pradesh is its integral part, insisting that Beijing never recognised the ‘illegal’ McMahon Line and that the status of the border state was ‘never officially demarcated’.

Deeply regretting External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement that Arunachal Pradesh was part of India, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said New Delhi has not taken into account the ‘historical facts’.

"We deeply regret the Indian side's remarks, that take no regard of the historical facts," Qin said when asked to comment on Mukherjee's comments on Sunday in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh that the state was an integral part of India and that China was "aware" of it.

"China and India have never officially settled demarcation of borders, and China's stance on the eastern section of China-India borders is consistent and clear-cut," Qin said at a regular bi-weekly news briefing.

"The current Chinese government, as well as previous ones, has never recognised the illegal "McMahon Line," the official Xinhua news agency quoted Qin as saying.

"India knows this," Qin said, referring to the McMahon Line, the demarcation line drawn on map referred to the Shimla Convention in 1914. Although China disputes its legal status, the McMahon Line is currently the effective boundary between China and India.

Mukherjee had also said that "China is often making claims on Arunachal Pradesh, but Arunachal Pradesh has a special place in our heart."

"People of Arunachal Pradesh regularly elect two representatives to the Lok Sabha and there is an elected state assembly carrying out the responsibility of administration like any of other 27 states. The question of parting company of Arunachal or any of its part does not arise," he had said.

As for the pending boundary issue between China and India, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said that China is willing to find a solution, which is "fair, reasonable and acceptable" to the two sides, through peaceful and friendly negotiation in the spirit of mutual understanding and adjustment.

Mukherjee's rejection of the Chinese claim on Arunachal Pradesh follows recent declaration of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a visit to the state that Arunachal was 'our land of rising sun'.

This is the second time within a week that Beijing has reacted sharply to Mukherjee's remarks on China.

On November 7, China had rejected an apparent 'China threat' remark made by him during a speech.

India says China is illegally occupying 43,180 sq kms of Jammu and Kashmir including 5,180 sq km illegally ceded to Beijing by Islamabad under the Sino-Pakistan boundary agreement in 1963. On the other hand, China accuses India of possessing some 90,000 sq km of Chinese territory, mostly in Arunachal Pradesh.

Indo- Chinese Border issue by Dipack on 11 Nov 2008

Briefly: During the 1962 conflict, the manner in which the CPM, CPI etc etc, conducted themselves was most questionable. Their public statements at that time were completely unpatriotic / insensitive

Arunachal Pradesh by Kal Venkataraman on 11 Nov 2008

The Chinese can never be trusted based on our 1962 experience. We should gear up our defense presence (both Army and Air Force) in this area so that we will be able to give a fitting reply to the Chinese if they create any mischief this time. The Chinese are back stabbers. I am sure India's closeness to the US is irritating them. We shouldn't budge this time.

China by niraj nigam on 11 Nov 2008

Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet? by Chethan Prabhu on 11 Nov 2008

This is what happens when we depart from principle and let the Chinese get away with their annexation of Tibet. It is time that India start raising the issue of Tibetian Independence more forcefully in international forums.

Chinese expansionism by Jayadevan on 11 Nov 2008

China is very clear in its views on Akhanda Cheen. It is said that Chou en Lai (old spelling) had a map showing the major part of Eurasia and half of India as part of the Chinese realm (remember Genghis Khan and Kanishka?). Idiots are the same all over the world. The unfortunate part is that the world is ruled by idiots, who cause misery to millions in search of their fantasies. This is the fate of the world. The farmer covets the plot of land next to his, without bothering to improve his own. Even we are not free from this - remember Sikkim?China has problems with all its neighbours. They remember that the Japanese gave them a drubbing, that their Arjuna Vietnam defeated them in Kampuchea. And this humiliation drives them, without once stopping to remember that China was known for its learning, and even now some of the best brains all over the world are Chinese. We have to thank the rulers for driving the young out of China. The Americans thanked Hitler for the Jews, didn’t they?

India-China War by Dominic Fernandes on 11 Nov 2008

India should declare War on China immediately.India must then round up all the RSS , VHP and Bajrang Dal braves as well as their sympathisers and airlift them to the Arunachal Border, the Kashmir border and the sikkim border. They should be given all weapons that they may require, including nuclear and chemical weapons. The conventional indian army should be stationed behind this braves to ensure that they fight until the last man.India's goal should be complete recovery of arunachal , complete recovery of chinese ocupied kashmir and siachen , and complete liberation of Tibet and Taiwan as well as manchuria. India should not stop this war unless all of these Goals are achieved.Only THREE results are possible 1) China will be destroyed and there will be complete peace3)India will be totally destroyed and there will be peace.3) Both will be be destroyed and the world will be a better place.

Regain tibet back, If india have to count any chance by vicky on 11 Nov 2008

I think the biggest mistake made by indian foregion policy makers ever was to accept tibet as chinese part....To correct , india should now again assert tibet as free state....or as indian territory..Tibet is strategically so strong a point....India can't afford to lose this point , to china so easily....Just it's not the time to be patriotic.....but to think from minds.........Only way to counter china stratigically is to regain tibet again....otherwise..........whole of north east( not only arunachal pradesh) is gone from indian hands

What next ! by Debasis Sengupta on 11 Nov 2008

I am sure to-morrow Prakash Karat will speak in favor of China and will raise the issue in Parliament why we do not give Arunachal back to China. If he is a true Indian, he should come out

Exchange by Virender on 11 Nov 2008

We should barter our communists for Arunachal Pradesh. All the oldies can be gainfully employed by the chinese in their potato farms

our neighbour was beaten up! by common indian on 11 Nov 2008

when our neighbour tibet was getting thrashing, we officialy recognised right of china to thrash them, with the hope that chinese will spare us. but chinese are clear in their mind, they want india into constant fear so that it never dares to go beyond that.It had been our consistant policy of being defensive and apologetic, instead of being aggressive and diplomatic.result is everybody claims us and take away the chunk of the land and butcher or throw back the people of native religion even if they are original inhabitant of that land.

never trust the chinese by ashok pai on 11 Nov 2008

let it be any PM. we can never gnore the chinese. they are the most self centred country in this world. a country whose leadership is based on a pyramid. as is the top - so does the entire ladder made up - mostly selfish commies.the people of china deserve better. they need a democracy. better a flawed democracy than a selfish commie. what do our comrades from the bengal region have to say abt this ?

Dragon Fire by Chandran Nair on 11 Nov 2008

According to China watchers, new generation chinese, in the age group below 25, having been used to a life of Rap, Revlon, Rolex , Radisson, Wal-Mart, Coke , Starbuck and local millionnaires, couldn't care less for Mao and his red book. Battle tanks and guns on Tiananmen Square is no more a solution; with the web of buyers of their goods, and potential raw material providers tying them. As something to keep the 'national spirit' alive among the kids, they need real and imaginary issues of persecution, to be taken out of the 'frig periodically. India provides the best ops, with with a good many local admirers, and governments with kid-gloves and very weak knees. High time India treats these attempts at overlord ism with loud and clear contempt. Media too, should fall in line,-tuck such reports as four-liners at bottom. p.7.

Fault of Nehru by D.Bose on 11 Nov 2008

It is great misfortune for India to have Nehru as the Prime Minister, who has never studied Indian or Asian history, as he was educated entirely in Britain. Tibet, East Turkistan, Inner Mongolia, Manchuria and Taiwan were never parts of China historically, but separate indepent nations. In fact China itself was occupied by both Mongols and Manchus. Thus, if you talk about historical claims Mongolia can claim China. Manchuria can claim independence from China and then claim the whole of China, as the last Emperor of China was not Chinese but Manchu. Taiwan was never Chinese until it was occupied by Chiang Kai Seikh in 1949.India should give a history lesson to China and recognize the independence Tibet, East Turkistan, Taiwan and Manchuria. That will be Tit for Tat..

India-China Border Issue by Ashok Mehta on 11 Nov 2008

We foolishly concentrated on Pakistan even though China has always looked our territories one after another as if the whole Inida belongs to them! Our narrow mindedness thrown Pakistan deep into the Chinese hands. Why not we agree on Kashmir being a open state for both Indians and Pakistanis virtually throwing China off the feet. Then we totally focus towards China. Today, our policies are confused and very narrow. Every Indian move, China will use its trump card in Pakistan against us. This is a foreign policy disastor. India-China Border Issue by Madayil Nair on 11 Nov 2008

Where will be Obama, the President-Elect?Two major emerging economies and two most populous nations of the world are in conflict, with Tibet in the middle. China and India had a border war in 1962 and the border tension continued for over 45 years and still not settled. This is more dangerous that the Kashmir issue. Historically, Arunachal, the Northeastern sector of India, bordering Tibet was part of India. India did make a strategic error without challenging the Tibet take-over by China. In 1962 China challenged India in a border war and India lost. Time changed, military strength of both nations multiplied many fold. If there is a conflict, and it is possible, US President should take a stand much more definite than that of 1962 to avoid global catastrophe of a nuclear war involving around 40% of world population. Where will be US and President Obama in this major global conflict?www.manixthoughts.blogspot.com

Pay commission has demoralised soldiers by Aditya on 11 Nov 2008

India is heading for another 1962. With all the pay commission fracas and the destruction of the armed forces from within. And the Chinese know this. We're going to regret all this.

China does it again by AAA on 11 Nov 2008

Mr Govt till yesterday you were telling there is no problem in China relation. Its on right path is that right now? China has claimed Arunachal Pradesh and sikkin and what not? Can this be made public now rather than fooling people. What are the preparations from Indian side if china threatens India. CAG had just pulled defence ministry for aging IAF fleet size and worst conditions of the submarine. Defence minister has already accepted this? What are we doing? Govt not bothered about internal security as well as threats from external security to the country. What is this happening? What form of Govt is this? Please resign if you are not able to run the country properly.

Chinese tantrums by VIJAY NAIR on 11 Nov 2008

The Chinese are known for back stabbing as was evident from the 1962 war. We should not fall into their traps like 'peaceful negotiation of boundary issues' etc. Only the Chinese know what is transpiring in their mind when they say like that. The pace of infrastructure development for troop deployment at the Chinese side of the border evidently is a pre-cursor to the events that can unfold in the future. Our forces must be extra vigilant to the Chinese design and should be careful to ensure that we are not in another 1962-like situation. Jai Hind.

AP Boundary is Legal, tells china by Joe Turner on 11 Nov 2008

The slit/half eyed diminutive war mongering Chinese are always looking for trouble. India shouls arm Taiwan with nuclear weapons and play the game chini and paki are playing together with India. Liberate Tibet from the chini communists. The day of chini collapse is not far off. Down down china.
