New Delhi, May 10: In a sensational turn, police on Friday arrested Rajesh Talwar for allegedly killing his daughter Arushi and domestic help Hemraj in their residence last week possibly because both of them knew about his extra-marital affairs and the two victims themselves shared a close relationship.

Exactly a week after the girl's murder came to light, Meerut Zone Inspector General Gurdarshan Singh told a press conference that Talwar was arrested after enough evidence was gathered, including the "strenuous cover-up" attempts by the dentist.

He said Talwar first killed the domestic help on the terrace of the house in the small hours of May 16 and then came down to kill his daughter after having some whiskey.

Singh said investigations were on and parried all questions whether any more arrests have been made in the case.

There have been reports that Nupur, wife of Talwar, also a dentist, and his doctor colleague Anita Durrani have been

detained in connection with the twin murder.

"Investigations are on and we have revealed to you details about which the probe is over. We have not done the arrest solely on the basis of confessions. We will not arrest a person if we do not have sufficient evidence," Singh said replying to a barrage of questions.

After taking Talwar on remand, he said police would take him out for recovering the weapons used in the murder – a sharp edged weapon and possibly a hammer-like object.

Singh said Arushi had objected to her father's extra-marital affairs and was angry about it. She had discussed the issue with Hemraj. In the process, the two victims had also shared a close relationship.

On the night hours before the murder, Singh said, Talwar had returned from his clinic and had found the two in an ‘objectionable’ condition but not in a compromising position.

Hemraj had also discussed with his friends the doctor's alleged illicit relationship, which Talwar did not like. Hemraj had also feared for his life and had told some of his friends about that.

But the police official did not name with whom Talwar had illicit relationship but speculation was that it was with another doctor colleague.

He said on the pretext of talking to Hemraj, Talwar took him to the terrace and killed him by hitting his head with a heavy weapon and then used a sharp-edged weapon.

Then he came downstairs, had whiskey and around 1 am he killed Arushi by first hitting her head with a heavy object and then using a sharp-edged weapon to slit her throat.

Singh said police had several reasons to suspect the involvement of Talwar in the murders, one being that the couple was not prompt in calling the police and instead called people close to them to talk about the incident.

He said Talwar ‘sentimentally attacked’ the police when the murder has come to light and tried to mislead by saying they should not waste time at the crime spot rather go and look for Hemraj, who he said was the killer.

Another reason for suspicion was that they chose to dump Arushi's mattress on the neighbour's terrace. There was no forced entry.

"Talwar would not have been in sound sleep when the murder took place as he was talking on phone till 12 am. The area is peaceful and there is no traffic. So the slightest activity should have woken them up. It is not possible that a murder take place in the room right next to theirs and they did not hear anything," Singh said.

Suspicions were also raised because efforts were put into hiding Hemraj's body.

"The lid of the cooler was put on the body so that nobody could spot it and the door to the terrace was locked. Any killer who could have come did not bother to close the terrace door and lock it," he added.

Her mother Nupur was in their bedroom when the murder took place.

"Investigations are on and we have revealed to you details about which the probe is over. We have not done the arrest solely on the basis of confessions. We will not arrest a person if we do not have sufficient evidence," Singh said.

Lal said the details provided by former servant Krishna helped the police a lot in the case. "Hemraj used to tell him that he feared for his life as he knew about the doctor's affairs," he said.

The weapons used in the crime are yet to be recovered and police said Talwar's inputs would be important in finding them.

The police has been under tremendous pressure to crack the case ever since the failure of the Noida sleuths in finding Hemraj's body came to light.

The body was discovered by a retired police official who had come to the Talwar's residence to offer condolences.

The case has been under intense media glare and it grabbed headlines on account 'whodunit' nature ever since the discovery of the body of Hemraj, who was initially the prime suspect.

Transfer of CBI director indicate that truth is being hidden.Evidence hidden by noida police in starting investigations. All this can be done only by influential Talwars and not by the nepali workers. The nepali workers krishna and rajkumar are made scapegoats to save talwar.

The whole tragedy by Siddharth on 01 Jul 2008

I feel very sad that a 14 Yr old girl had to meet with such a horrid end. The matter be rigorously pursued by the media untill the real killer(s) are found. Then they must be hanged in public. I feel that the CBI has still kept the Mr. Talwar under custody for a reason. But he has my deepest sympathies if he is indeed innocent. But if he is guilty of the horrendous murders, i wish him a painfull death. Many readers here feel that a father can never kill his own daughter. But you people fail to recall that a father can be sick and completely deranged to keep his own daughter a captive in the basement for more than a decade and force her to bear his children. Such psychopathic and mentally deranged people must not be allowed to live.

arushi murder case by manjari on 19 Jun 2008

murder case by abirami on 11 Jun 2008

this is one such incident which leads us to wonder where the countries ethos and moral standards are upto... father killing his own daughter and that too a doc by profession ... and the reason behind that being an illicit relationship...the mother trying to cover up ...and topping all these the allegations on the poor girl, of god knows what "close" relationship with the domestic help...and a wonderful job by the police to fumble it all up ...i guess its high time everybody come to terms with their inner demons and banish them for good!!!

Arushi murder case by Niveditha on 10 Jun 2008

I have no Idea to what extent our police officials are corrupted. here was enough time for them to crack the case, I am sure its MR talwar who is the culprit.I am not able to figure out, why is Mrs Talwar trying to support her husband. I still think the goverment has to put pressure on the police officails to find the weapons, and arrest the culprit.

Murder by Nirmala Shivanna on 09 Jun 2008

This worst case i have seen where a father has killed his own daughter!! Sad... These people should be hanged in public. At least then people like Mr.Talwar will start thinking twice before committing such crime. I am quite surprised why Mrs.Talwar is keeping silent in this matter. Please don’t victimize your family people for the mistakes you do..

arushi murder case by AK on 09 Jun 2008

I just started following this murder case but I already find things disturbing. I believe that both parents and not just Mr. Talwar should be suspects. The evidence so far, suggests that there was a huge cover-up and the Mrs. couldn't really have slept through it. Maybe, there is more to this extra-martial affair. The question arises if Mr. Talwar was so keen on keeping his illicit activities under-wrap and resorted to killing a servant/worker and his daughter then was she at all a blood relation to him or was she adopted. What twisted human being thinks that killing his daughter over the knowledge of an illicit affair would solve the problem.

Arushi murder case by Anil Singh on 08 Jun 2008

Mr. Talwar is a ghost who murdered his daughter.

May be or May not be by Ashok Priyadarshan on 08 Jun 2008

See first of all everyone should note a point that why her father says that he killed her..... if he is the killer then why he is not explaining the truth....... because the truth is not to hear..... there may be a wrong link between that girl and the servant...... by knowing that the father frustrated and killed them.... this is my opinion this may be not true......

CBI probe in Arushi murder by hemashok on 06 Jun 2008

my strong opinion in this investigation is CBI finally doing some thing useful to the society cleaning drains which are not cleaned for so many years. i would like to thank CBI For cleaning the drians. CBI wont solve this mistery and finally it will declare talwars as innocent. i have no idea why government wastes lot of money by doing this type of unnecessary investigations. our police department have to learn how to investigate a murder case. even common people in india know how to investigate a murder. at least these people have to watch some movies and learn how to deal with murder cases. its so rediculous and sad. this investigation will run for couple of months and finally they give clean chit to talwars. its all waste of money and time.

She was as good as gold by Siddharth on 06 Jun 2008

i dont know her but i know 1 think about her that she was a very good girl i hv been following her case since the unfortunate incident n i think that her murderer should be punished in such a manner that again would do such a crime n may her soul rest in peace

arushi case by j. partha on 06 Jun 2008

The attitude of arushi's parents raises a doubt on whether arushi was their real child or adopted child? Police should also look into this as both the parents have shown no emotions at all

message by r.k. das.silchar..assam on 05 Jun 2008

the alleged non cooperation of Mr.n Mrs.Talwar in the investigation bring them in suspicion..by seeing their attitude, body lang.n xpression, sometimes i wonder whether these people r misleading the whole nation about the truth of arushi's murder..there was never any spontaneous reaction on d part of the duo..whenever they said something, it seemed their words were calculated ones..the initial casual attitude of Police s also incomprehensible.

message by dr. ramu on 05 Jun 2008

i have been following this tragic incident taking away lives of two people..the most worrying part being her father supposed to be the murderer..i feel for mrs talwar who just lost her beautiful child and now on the verge of loosing husband also..but, but if mr talwar is invilved in this brutal killing he should be punished..one thing is pretty clear the police is juston the tip of the ice berg and a great surprise is awaited..
