Cousins Dipesh Vaghela (10) and Abhishek Vaghela (11) went missing from the ashram on July 3 last year. Their bodies were found from the Sabarmati riverbed two days later. Inspector H P Rajput of CID (Crime) found that it was negligence by sadhaks — Pankaj Saxena, Yogesh Bhati, Vikas Khemka and Minketan Patra — and ashram administrators Uday Sanghani and Kaushik Vani that led to the deaths. Rajput filed the first complaint in the case in Gandhinagar, after which DySP R K Patel of the same department was asked to further investigate it.
“The seven have been booked under IPC Section 304 (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act,” said Patel.
He added: “The accused knew about the boys going missing from day one, but informed the police only on July 7 after their bodies were found. They are also accused of misguiding the victims’ parents and stopping them from going to the police. The FIR states that the accused sadhaks practiced black magic in the ashram.”
