Kolkata, March 7 In response to the February 28 orders of the Calcutta High Court, Ashok Todi, father of Priyanka Todi, and former chief of Kolkata police Prasun Mukherjee filed affidavits in the Rizwanur Rehman death case today.

In his affidavit, Todi issued a series of denials concerning everything about the marriage. He even denied that the marriage took place at all or his daughter lived with her husband at his Tiljala home. He also denied any complicity with police officers from Lalbazar to disrupt the couple's life or putting pressure on them to separate.

“It is denied and disputed that the deceased boy allegedly married my daughter Priyanka under the Special Marriage Act on August 18, 2007, in the marriage registration office of Sipra Ghosh,” the affidavit stated.

He also denied that his daughter had informed him about her residing with her husband, implying instead that she had been “taken” to the Rehmans’ Tiljala home. "I say that on August 31, 2007, I had gone to meet my daughter at 7B, Tiljala Lane where she had been taken,” the affidavit said.

The affidavit, however, gave no indication of why Priyanka returned to her parents’ house on September 8 — 13 days before Rehman’s body was found near the railway tracks at Patipukur near Dum Dum.

It had been alleged by the petitioner that Kolkata police officers, including the then DCP (Headquaters) Gyanwant Singh and then DCP (Detective Department) Ajoy Kumar along with two others from the Anti-Rowdy section of the Detective Department, had pressurised and mentally tortured Rehman.

Todi denied that the police officers were beneficiaries of any favour by him or they had allegedly harassed Rizwanur or Priyanka at his behest.

Todi also stated that he did not abet any suicide or issued any threats to Rehman.

In another affidavit, Prasun Mukherjee stated that cricketer Snehasish Ganguly had introduced him to Pradip Todi, brother of Ashok Todi.

This affidavit, though, was contrary to the one filed by the cricketer, in which he admitted to introducing Pradip Todi to Mukherjee at Lalbazar, urging him to sort out the problems over the marriage.

Mukherjee also stated in his affidavit that the media exaggerated his statement on the death of Rehman. Defending the media conference at Lalbazar, he said he had addressed the media to avoid any communaltension.

He also alleged that the CBI did not ask him to sign the statement after he was questioned on November 6. “How could the CBI recommend disciplinary action against me?” he contended.

In its affidavit, the state government reiterated its earlier stand that the CBI had conducted its investigation in violation of the court’s order. The High Court had asked the CBI to investigate the death of Rehman, but the CBI had initiated a murder case, the state argued.
