According to the police, the two then randomly fired in the air to scare away passersby and took a bike from a man from the nearby market at gunpoint. The two are absconding.
The incident occurred at 1.30 pm, when the police team at the picket stopped their bike during a random inspection drive, the police said. According to the police, constables Jagdish, Lalit and Roop Kishore flagged the motorcycle and sought their vehicle documents and driving licence. When the two failed to show papers, the police asked them to sit in a PCR van for further questioning. The police said at this point one of them took out a countrymade pistol, pointed it at the cops and fired in the air before escaping on foot.
The police said they kept firing in the air to thwart the constables chasing them and entered a nearby apartment complex. In there, they reportedly fired on a car and broke the windshield. From the complex, they entered Gandhi Vihar Market — here they stopped a motorcyclist, one Sanjeev Jain, and took away his motorcycle at gunpoint, the police said. Jain works as a verification officer with Reliance Infocomm.
Mandavali police have registered a case under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 392 (robbery). The police are trying to trace owner of the bike that the youths abandoned at the picket.
