Bhadana, a Congress MP, and his security personnel had allegedly manhandled and “confined” the inspector on duty in his car.
The inspector, Vimal Kumar of the Delhi Police’s security wing, was posted on security duty of visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
The incident occurred around 10 on Sunday night, when Inspector Kumar asked Bhadana to move away from the porch of Taj Mansingh hotel, Chanakyapuri, where Brown and his entourage were staying, police officials today said.
Sources said Kumar was making way for Brown’s arrival in the hotel’s main porch, when he found Bhadana standing there with his security personnel. His contention: the porch was a sensitive zone, so the MP had to move aside.
But, “the MP did not listen, and began an argument,” said a police officer who was present there. Bhadana and his security personnel then “misbehaved with the officer and manhandled him. One of the security guards pushed the officer into the car.”
Other security wing police came to the scene at this point and handled the situation, the officer said — “a PCR call was made later.”
New Delhi district police have now registered a case under IPC Sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of his functions), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter him from his duty), 342 (wrongful confinement), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) against Bhadana and his personal security guards.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) I B Rani said, “We are investigating the case. The police officer’s statements have been taken.”
No arrests have been made yet.
According to police officials present there, Bhadana’s wife was also accompanying him. The MP from Faridabad (Haryana) lives at 16-Janpath. Newsline could not contact him despite repeated attempts. His personal assistant, S S Negi, said, “I don’t know anything about the incident.”
