The incident happened in the remote Awang Kasom Khullen area of the district around 5 pm yesterday when Rifleman T S Tangkhul of the 17th Assam Rifles, posted under Chingai police station, opened fire at his colleagues, killing the JCO and five other jawans, following a quarrel Tangkhul had with another rifleman over duty, police said on Thursday.
A manhunt has been launched to nab the accused, who hails from Nagaland. Tangkhul allegedly fled with his service rifle, they said.
The bodies of the six victims are being kept at the Chingai police station and arrangements are being made to bring them to the district headquarters of Ukhrul.
