Kolkata, July 31 The state government ruled out the demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland saying that it would lead to the balkanisation of the country. The announcement was made in the state Assembly on Thursday, even as the House passed two resolutions brought by the Left Front against division of the state.

“An effort is being made to separate the Hills from the state. There will soon lead to a situation when there will be demands for all districts to be turned into states. A political solution to the problem can be found through the tripartite meeting between the West Bengal government, the Central government and the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha,” Ashok Bhattacharya, Urban Development Minister, told the Assembly.

He later said that the government was trying to hold the tripartite talks in August. “Before the talks, state officials will visit the Hills and hold talks with the Morcha to prepare ground for the meeting,” Bhattacharya said.

The other resolution denounced the demands of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha for inclusion of districts of Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore in Jharkhand and shifting of headquarters of Coal India and Damodar Valley Corporation from Kolkata to Ranchi. Minister for Commerce and Industries Nirupam Sen said that a sinister conspiracy was being hatched to divide the state.
