Association meet discusses need for public library legislation in Punjab

Patiala, January 2 Enactment of legislation for public libraries in Punjab was the main topic of discussion at the general body meeting of the Punjab Library Association, held at Punjabi University in Patiala.

According to a release, the Draft Punjab Public Libraries Bill 2003, prepared by a committee set up by the Punjab Secretary for Higher Education was the main issue at the meet.

The members of the association urged the state government to make Punjab the 15th state of India having the library legislation. Career advancement scheme for college librarians; pay commission anomalies and vacation for school librarians were some of the other issues discussed during the meet.

The following were elected as the office-bearers and members of the Executive Committee of Punjab Library Association for biennial term of 2008 and 2009: President: Kuldip Singh Dhillon; senior vice-president: Karam Singh; vice-presidents: Survinder Singh Chhabra, Charan Singh, and Iqbal Singh; general secretary: Dr Harinder Pal Singh Kalra; joint secretaries: Dr Gursharanjit Singh, and Harjot Singh; treasurer: Nirmal Chand Verma; members of the executive committee: Dr Jasmer Singh; Dr Prem Chand Sehgal; Rupinder Singh; Barjinder Pal Dhiman, Kulveen Kaur Ahuja, Tejinderbir Singh, and Dr Trishanjit Kaur.
