It is still not clear if the incident is an accident or a suicide. The deceased, who is around 25 years old, had apparently been walking on the tracks.
According to a DMRC release, the train operator had seen the youth in the tunnel and applied emergency brakes, but the train hit him before it could stop.
While no one had said so officially, some of the passengers on the platform had reportedly said he had jumped down on the track and started walking towards the running train. Despite the lack of eyewitness at the spot, the DMRC officials say it was a case of suicide.
The youth was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died later.
The body, however, is yet to be identified. A regular commuter, Rajender Prasad, said, “I saw the body. I think I have seen him at the Metro station several times sweeping the floor at the platform. He was wearing a sky blue shirt and it seems that he fell on the tracks while cleaning the floor.” Prasad owns a shop near Chawri Bazar Metro station.
Anuj Dayal, DMRC Public Relations Officer, however confirmed he was not their employee.
Immediately after the incident, extra security forces were rushed to the Chawri Bazar Metro station. The train services had to stopped, but were resumed soon.
A postmortem will be conducted after the identification, police said. No identity card, documents or phone numbers were recovered from the deceased’s possession. He also did not leave any suicide note.
This is the third incident of death on tracks since Metro has come into existence.
A 25-year-old woman, Paramjeet Kaur, had jumped in front of a train at the busy underground Chandni Chowk station on July 18, 2006.
On December 26, 2006, a 32-year-old man, Manoj Kumar, died after a metro train crushed him at Kashmere Gate Metro station.
