Kolkata, June 13 The demand for Gorkhaland has found some support in the students’ body of the Presidency College.

The Independent Council (IC) has geared up to take the issue of Gorkhaland and put up three posters in the college campus.

The posters expressed the IC’s two point agenda — support for the demand of Gorkhaland and lambasting the state government for their shoddy handling of the crisis in the hills.

They also held the CPM and it’s student wing, Student’s Federation of India (SFI), responsible for the recent crisis in Darjeeling.

“We will be supporting the Gorkha people in their struggle. Although we do not want a Bengal split, we hold the CPM solely responsible for the trauma, the people in the hills are facing,” said Abhijit Sarkar, general secretary of the IC.

“This could have been avoided had the state government acted responsibly,” he added. The SFI, however, claimed that IC was making contradictory statements.

“On the one hand they are saying that they do not support a statehood demand while on the other, they support their demand just to put up an anti-CPM protest,” said Mayukh Biswas, unit president of the SFI.

The IC has also threatened to contact the newly-formed Gorkha Youth Council and take appropriate measures if the situation demands so. The SFI, on the other hand, has promised not to let a third Bangla split occur.
