At least 27 killed in Sri Lanka violence

Colombo, January 10: At least 26 Tamil Tigers and a soldier were killed in intense gun battles between the rebels and government troops in restive northern Sri Lanka, the military said on Thursday.

At least eight Tiger rebels were killed and 12 others injured in clashes at Parappakandal in north-western Mannar on Wednesday, the Defence Ministry said adding, four army personnel sustained injuries in the battle.

Four LTTE men were killed in a separate confrontation in the same area on Wednesday, it said.

Army snipers gunned down two Tiger rebels near the LTTE defence lines at Narikkulam in Mannar on Wednesday, defence sources in Wanni said.

Two militants were killed during a gun battle with security forces at Navthkulam in Mannar, it said adding, in another incident at Vankalacheddikulam, two soldiers sustained injuries.

At Kandeperumakulam in northern Vavuniya district, three soldiers were injured during clashes with the LTTE and were rushed to a hospital, the Media Centre for National Security said.

In Umayatathuvakulam in the same district, security forces killed two LTTE rebels and injured a few others in Vavuniya last evening.

In separate incidents, troops killed three rebels at Mullikulam, two in Chettikulai in Mannar and three in Janakapura in north-eastern Welioya, the MCNS said.
