Attacks on Indian students not racism: Oz Senate panel

Melbourne Amid a spate of attacks on Indian youths in Australia, a Senate committee which probed the issue has concluded that the assaults were more likely to be "opportunistic robberies" than prompted by racism, prompting a student body to say the authorities "are still in denial."

"There was very little evidence that the assaults were based on racism or discrimination," Committee Chairman and Liberal Party senator Gary Humphries told 'The Australian'.

The Senate committee report on the welfare of international students, tabled in Parliament on Thursday, found that the majority of evidence suggested that assaults against the youths were more likely to be "opportunistic robberies" than prompted by racism.

A total of 94 cases of attacks on Indians have been reported so far this year in Australia as against 17 incidents of assaults in 2008.

Reacting to the report, Federation of Indian Students of Australia (FISA) President Amit Menghani said the authorities "are still in denial of the major issue."

Menghani said it was not just a matter of some students not being safety conscious. The inquiry "failed" to address the issue "and it could really damage the reputation of the Australian education system again," he was quoted as saying.

International Education Association of Australia Director Dennis Murray also criticised the report, saying "it doesn't get to grips with the issue of social cohesion".

Is this story accurate? by Flavian Hardcastle on 29 Nov 2009

94 attacks over the space of a year is really not many, especially for a population of about 250, 000 Indians living in Australia.

Australia not a racist nation? by Aussiegrief on 28 Nov 2009

The CEO of Amnesty International Irene Khan has labelled australia as a racist nation; Before departing Sol Trujlio the former CEO of Telstra called Australia a racist nation. United Nations Rappertoir to Australia called Aussie govt policies towards indegenous australians " Racist". Time and again people with global reputation have called Australia a racist nation. So whatever Gary Humphry says is just a cover up and meaningless; just as many others in the senate do, they are on a denial mode.

very telling by Flavian Hardcastle on 29 Nov 2009

This comment actually has relatively little to do with the subject at hand. However, it says a lot about the real motives behind this media hysteria about a small number of routine muggings in Australia. The real motive is not resentment of any specific alleged actions by Australians (e.g, the alleged targeting of Indians), just an expression of resentment of Australians in general. It is bigotry against a minority, which of course, is commonplace in India, as anyone who reads the Amnesty International reports on India will know.

Useless Son - Useless as Ever by Rodgers Father on 29 Nov 2009

You are getting good at this aren't you with changing your names etc. But you are the same useless person who drives in 1930's taxi at the top speed of 25kmh in Melbourne.

Useless Father by Juan Carlos d. Autopista on 01 Dec 2009

Rodgers Father. You are getting boring. By repetition of your 'Words of WISDUMB' you will not become any clever. It is not how the OZ panel concieves racism but it about how the Indians perceive it.

Stop being a Nut job by Roger on 30 Nov 2009

Stop blabbering like a knit-wit in your broken dabbling english. Gary Humprey is a right wing liberal who doesn't even accept the existence of Global Warming. How can a senate enquiry headed by such a low IQ senator can even be deemed as an enquiry report! The right wing libs are the same set of people who have time and again pushed policies against the indegenous australians and also other minority faiths in Australia.

Sad Story by Harish Velji - Australia on 28 Nov 2009

I thought it might be of interest that a study by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in collaboration with the University of Washington amongst 4000 students aged 12 to 16 in Victoria and Washington state about their violent behaviour shows that in the first interview, 12.6 per cent of Victorian boys admitted to such behaviour, compared with 10 per cent of Washington boys.A year later the numbers were even higher: 17.5 per cent in Victorian and 12.6 per cent in Washington. In this group 20% of the Victorian kids binged drinked whilst in Washington it was 8%. It is this where the problems lie. Source:Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology

Rest My Case for the Nth Time by Rodgers Father on 28 Nov 2009

Any right minded person would know that the attacks in Australia have not been of racists nature. Just because Indian students run to the media it gives an apperance of they being the only ones target. Gautam Gupta with his colleague ran to India prior to the Australian Primes Ministers visit to brief mediia and politicans of anti Australian stand but wisely they were ignored. Whilst some crimes are of racists nature vast majority are related to were by under employed youth. This happens in all part of Australia. I am sure my useless son and his sidekick (both of many many non de plumes)will be highlighting the contrary. The day my useless son depart Melbourne in a one way to ticket to Pakistan than his voice will crediblity.

Wrong thinking.... by Roy on 28 Nov 2009

the right thinker asserts his view of a single nationality...racism, predominantly, means caucasian & the others. The thinker should also take into account something called 'attitude' & the concept of me being better than you economically, culturally & socially...like what we have in our own country the priveleged & the less priveleged. Was the right thinker including the rest of the world?!!!!

Australian attacks on indians by jagrit on 28 Nov 2009

Australia has racism undercurrents very similar to erstwhile apartheid policies in SA, albeit in lower orders. Even this senate committee is only seeing what it wants to see or paint for the society to see. For a community to embrace universality, the first step is to admit its weaknesses. Sweeping the problems like lack of education and strict rules under the carpet will simply not do.

OZ GOVT. AND RACISM by INDIANS on 28 Nov 2009

TO OZ SENATE PANEL: ..IF IT WAS NOT RACISM, WHAT WAS OR IS IT? GOONDAISM? EVEN THAT TOO IS A RESPONSIBILITY OF AUTRAILIAN GOVT. TO CONTROL. WHY ALLOW EVEN GOONDAISM SO FREELY AND FREQUENTLY?

Racism in Australia by GNS on 28 Nov 2009

Racism is there in Australia with a few people just as it is there in India with Maharashtrians attacking North Indians in Mumbai. But it is not organised with political parties geared up like the Shiv Sena or MNS.I anticipate more attacks in future with bleak job prospects for Australian youngsters and with Indians coming here for so-called vocational education working for more than legally permitted 20 hours per week.So long as these Indian students observe local laws, stay in safer suburbs, with no more than two per room, return home before 10 PM and not visit local pubs for alcohol ( they can do at home ),they will be safe. Most local pubs are patronised by blue collar workers where if you do not know local footie or Rugby, you are a sore thumb. And even their English is like a foreign language. So stay from pubs which are like temples for the locals.Has Mr.Menghani publicly asked Indian students NOT to work beyond legally permitted 20 hours per week ? He won't.

Not Racism? by Roger on 28 Nov 2009

Typical conventional cover up! These aussies are unable to digest the reality and accept the publicity they have attracted.

Obsever by Ramesh on 28 Nov 2009

Australians sound like Pakistanis, liars. They do not give a damn to their aboriginal people, the real owners of the country. Secondly, may be their young people are not as smart as Indian students. They are simply jealous.

Ban Australian goods. by Boby Mehta on 28 Nov 2009

Gary Humphries belongs to Liberal party which is most racist party. John Howard had won three times on racial themes. The fact is Europeans in Australia consider themselves superior to Asians and, unless, taught a lesson, will never behave like normal human beings. But at present, under Congress, there is no hope. The fact is India is also ruled by Europeans. Kevin Rudd is also well known for his anti-India attitude.

Come back to India by Indian on 28 Nov 2009

I have come back to India after 17 years in USA. Even though the racism issue is not so blatant in USA as in Australia, it is just under the surface. Dotbusters in New Jersey were not so far in the past. I feel a great relief. My suggestion to Indian students in Australia is, come back to India. Education is superb and world class here - enough to compete with the best in the world. Make India strong economically. All these so ex-colonial powers who looted their colonies to develop their economies are slave to money power as evident by Obama's bending over backwards for china.

Attacks on Indian students not racism: Oz Senate panel by Sudhakar on 27 Nov 2009

Opportunistic?? Robberies?? Are we joking?

Attacks on Indian students by Himanshu Rajgor on 27 Nov 2009

I have just one question for Mr. Humphries - Were you smoking pot when you said that attacks on Indian students were not based on rascism. ??

Opportunistic? by Right thinker on 27 Nov 2009

Opportunistic robberies may not be confimed to a single nationality. At least that's what one tends to think when we do not hear reports about people of other nationalities being mugged, assaulted, robbed, abused ,etc. Racism at its best.

Hysteric by Flavian Hardcastle on 29 Nov 2009

Or perhaps, more realistically, Indians aren't being singled out at all, and people of all nationalities are being mugged at the same, or similar rate. It's just that the Indian media, alone, goes into hysterics about every single isolated incident against one of their nationals, creating the impression that the situation is much more dramatic than it really is.

opportunitsic by Jim of OZ on 28 Nov 2009

The indian media only reports the Indian victims of street crime in Australia, most of the victims are white.

. by amit on 28 Nov 2009

have you even been to Australia? I have been living here for 12 years and never came across a single racist incident (as againt maharashtra where north indians are not welcomed). If you go to a shady area at night with a laptop bag, guess what you get mugged. Its same story in every major city all over the world. And the reason you do not hear other nationalities getting mugged is because you read crappy indian news paper, is it even believable that in Australia only 94 people got mugged? think before you comment
