Melbourne India on Friday said the spate of violent attacks targeting its students in Australia 'should stop now' and asserted that authorities in Australia should come up with a solution to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Indian High Commissioner Sujata Singh, who met premier of Victoria John Brumby and top police and educational officials of the province, said there is a "racist element in some of the attacks" but many of them were "opportunistic".

"The fact of the matter is that whatever the motive behind the attacks, they seem to be Indian students," she told a crowded press conference in Melbourne.

Observing that the Indian students are seen as "soft targets," Singh said it has been made clear to the Australian government and police that they will have to come up with a solution to prevent such attacks.

"It is my earnest hope that these attacks stop now. And that is precisely what we are all trying to work towards," Singh, who was accompanied by Indian consul general to Melbourne Anita Nair, said.

Australia has recently seen a series of attacks on Indian students, the most serious being the assault of Shravan Kumar, a 25-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh who is battling for life in a hospital here after being stabbed by a screwdriver by a group of teens in a weekend attack that also left three of his friends injured.

I think this is natural - Just my thought by sreejesh on 16 Jun 2011

This is natural. In their country they have precedence, Imagine a set of Australian come to your territory, you treat them as outsiders( i am not talking about short time stay i am talking about long time stay), naturally there is a repulsion from us too. If Tamil state people take charge of Kerala sate people social life we naturally say what is this, Same thing happening in Australia too. We are just poor migrant always rather than bothering about them try to live our life. In most of the state is worse than Australia this type of abuse is rare in Australia but in India this is usual thing even in college the students are get beaten by senior then why we bother about them. if we get beat just shut you mouth and escape. if possible beat them back rather than complaining ..

A matter of shame for the australians by Sufian Ahmed on 02 Mar 2010

We, indian considers all the foreigners as our guest and in indian culture GUEST means 'GOD'.And just see what they are doing to our people,it's a shame for them. Just see the difference in ours and theirs cultures. It's would be better to stop all these,to avoid any further disaster to the future.

Sorry by John on 04 Jun 2009

As a proud Australian i would like to say sorry to the Indian population in Australia and i belive this would be the same thoughts of 99% of Australia as well. Worst luck we have a percentage who to me are scums and hopefully those guilty of these attacks are quickly rounded up and dealt with.I truely hope this does not sour the relationship that our two countries have as to most indian people are amoungst the freindliest people in the world and of course the hardest working

Response to P V N Rao's comment by N on 31 May 2009

Are all you people brain dead or just retarded ????? For god's sake PVN Rao, pull your head out from the clouds plenty of Australians attend uni as well as many other cultures. If your country is so great why don't you educate yourself there Mr Rao hmmmm???? Oh that's right your so superior you bash your clothes on rocks instead of using washing machines you dumb chute.Muggers pick the easiest targets whether they be old, young or perhaps weak. It has nothing to do with being Indian you simpletons. Not all things are like a bollywood movie so perhaps go wave the pity flag elsewhere.

attacks on indian students in australia by T.S.gopalakrishnan on 30 May 2009

Dear sirs, oflate.the problems faced by the Indians who have chosen to go abroad seeking better jobs and income are on the increase. We have seen such problems in USA, UK,Dubai etc,due to competion with the locals there. Now we are facing problems in Australia.Even in cricket we had problems in that country.Added to these we have problems due to Indian Diaspora conditions in Lanka, Malaysia etc.Our external affairs ministers who are to concentrate on trade, terrorism and peace in our external relations had to spend most of their time in issues of specific group as outlined above instead of problems of the nation as a whole.PM should think of a different mechanism to solve local issues of NRIs allowing the foreign affairs minister to concentrate on wider issues benefitting the country. Mr by Andrew M on 30 May 2009

These are not racist or religous attacks. The people carry out these robberies are just thugs and criminals. They would attack anyone they outnumbered regardless of race. There are many more attacks carried out on Australians by other Australians(and visitors). Australias laws are too soft and our society has allowed these type of people to do what they do by al the do-gooders and bleeding hearts. Our laws and policing must be tougher to stop this.

mr by vipul on 29 May 2009

i think that is the time to teach the people who are not coming from social background . if they beat the indian people so be united and beat them. now hat is the time to show we are coming from country where sardar patel and bhagat singh also bourn . so be a man and show them we are not here to live like prisoner . we are here to live with our indipendence life like tiger.so be indian and proud to be indian. jai hind

Attacks on students should stop now: India to Australia by P V N Rao on 29 May 2009

Is it a peculiar phenomena about being Indian and especially being Andhrite. Whether it is USA or Australia the students targeted are from Andhra. One fails to know why this attitude towards the Indian students. Is it because of their ability to pursue higher studies which the locals are not able to do so or is it because of our upbringing and the special importance shown to studies or education. The only way is to allow private universities to be allowed to be set up in our country which over a period of time can be the best in the world.

Please be noted that this is not a racial attack. This is a religious attack

PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN INDIA by DA on 29 May 2009

Force GOI to allow private universities in India. If such private universities are allowed, one day our universities for Higher Education can be better than a Stanford. (not that our goverment universities lack any standard. They definitely have greater values than the foreign universities. GOI run institution have to include each and every one, hence they are always challenged and pressurized). Some Indians with black money send their children to Foreign countries ( they spend almost USD 150,000 or more to get a MBA) These Indians spend precious foreign exchange of the nation and see what treatment they get abroad. The children get employed in General Motors, Citi Bank, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers. See the state of such companies. Whereas Indian institutions / SBI, Maruti / Tata / BHEL / NALCO / ICICI have upheld national esteem ( most of employees have studied in India).... BRING BACK OUR STATSHED AWAY DOLLARS AND DEVELOP THE NATION ! JAI HO. JAI HIND

Where have you been? by waleed ali on 29 May 2009

These attacks have been going on for almost 2 years and were not a public issue till the press in India started carrying the story. Ms. Nair and Mrs. Singh: Where have you been? We have lodged numerous complaints with you.

Indian students abroad by ngvaradan on 29 May 2009

In many foreign countries indian students are looked upon by locals with envy. Coupled with local economic problems the rivalry worsens. I have known bright indian students struggle in universities abroad say 'if only we got in to IITs or NITs we would be much happier'. It may be worthwhile to increase the number of IITs and NITs and keep them out of the purview of reservation. And attract the disgruntled american and australian students too to teach them how to behave!

do not trust by Praba on 29 May 2009
