On a controversial fifth day's play, the Indians were left to chase a stiff target of 333 in 72 overs but horrendous umpiring and inept batting saw them being skittled out for 210 in 70.5 overs to give Australia an invincible 2-0 lead in the four-match series.
In the nerve-wracking final moments, it seemed India would manage a draw at 210 for seven before Michael Clarke produced a dream spell to take three wickets in a span of five balls to give his team a sensational victory.
The victory in this rivetting Test, marked by controversial umpiring decisions and a simmering race row, allows the home team to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
The fifth and final day was sullied by some horrendous umpiring decisions and as has been the case so far, Australia had no reason to complaint while India found themselves at the receiving end of the goof-ups by Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson.
Although the Indians had reasons to be aggrieved with umpiring, the batting collapse was quite inexplicable as the fifth day SCG track did have something for the bowlers but was not unplayable for an experienced batting line-up.

Australia is a good team. They do not have to cheat. Yes Ricky Pointing cheated. Ganguli's dismissal was wrong and Ponting cheated on that. On another occassion, Ponting caught a pad ball (no contact with bat) from Dhoni, he hit the ground and ball touched the the ground and he was still asking umpire to give Dhoni out. On Indian side, the seniors tried very hard to face off the pressure. Dravid was fighting very hard before being sacrificed by Bucknor. So was Ganguli. He really fought hard. In the first inning, umpires helped Australia by giving free life to quite a few players. But Indians fought very hard in first innings. Now the umpires decided to take diffrent approach and changed tactics. Now they attacked Indian batting side. It was India's test to win but for the umpires. I always wonder about match fixing and Umpires involvement in it. They can do more damage than a tainted player or two.
Yes there always will be few mistakes in cricket by umpires. How many times in the history or cricket have you seen the umpire asked the fielding team captain if the fielder caught the ball? It is like hiring fox to guard chickens. Bensen was not sure about Ganguly's catch then he looks at Ponting. Ponting says yes by raising his finger and Bensen says yes Out he is! after few seconds. Even one bad umpiring decision can turn the test around. Pressure is bound to build when you let the other team get away with all the non-sense. It is Indian mentality to blame our players. The pressure was unbareable. What you expect when 2 well set players Dravid and Ganguly were given out. I think team India did exceptionally well under these conditions. Yes, it will ruffle some feathers but fair is fair. Yes it was 11 vs. 13. You give Symonds not out at 30 he goes to score 163 and then you give out Bret Lee wrongfully, is it all balanced? Yeh right. Giving Dravid out increased tremendous pressure on rest of the players. Why did they not referred to Third umpire in contraversial cases when umpire was not sure? In the first inning, India scored more than 500 runs, it is the same team. It was the 12th and the 13th player.
Australia didi not win this test. INDIA LOST IT. No excuses. With the umpires winning would be hard. But a draw was easy. We always bat 2 down with Jaffer
Its 11 vs 13. With 13 players any team can win any match. No wonder they are the best team in the world.
Sure Australia got the best of the umpiring but be fair it went both ways. Tendulkar was plumb lbw on 36, Ponting given out lbw after an inside edge, Brett Lee given lbw when well outside line, Dhoni given not out after ball hit his glove. These decisions were all incorrect and went in India's favour
I know bad decisions happen in a game and it has benefitted India sometimes, but lets not pretend that what we saw in this test match was us getting a few bad decisions and things not going our way. First of all, the decisions were not FEW! It was 7 bad decisions going against us. That many number of decisions going against a side would certainly turn the game decidedly towards the touring side. And this certainly happened in this game with Australia 135/5 and then letting Symonds playing 3 times in one inning. The australian side then alleging racist remarks by Harbhajan Singh, is the worst and sick form of strategy, used by the Australians to divert attention of the Indians, when they were clearly on roll. I would say Indians played better cricket than australia, both quality wise as well as in spirit. And Ricky Ponting, Symonds and Michael Clarke reinstated the faith in the title of the Australian cricket side called 'Ugly Aussies'
lame excuses. Bad umpiring goes both ways. India was unlucky this time. Now is the time for bold moves. Dravid, Ganguly and Tendulkar have paid their dues and must be thanked and retired. let the new crowd come except Kumble because he has all the hallmarks of a true leader. The young will loose a few but stick to them and eventually they will begin winning.
Very True. Since when has there been a perfectly umpired test match? Umpires have always made some errors (for both sides) - it's part of the game. It's just technology is now highlighting the errors more than before. India had a few decisions not go their way, but that's the game of cricket. The allegations of a conspiracy are ridiculous. Australia won the test by clearly winning the last six sessions of cricket. Enough said.
THROW AWAY THE TWO UMPIRES !!!!!!!!!!!!!If there is a consistent blunders in the game , it does'nt indicates mistakes but i tells us about how the home team is playing with 13 players on ground ...HATS OFF TO AUSTRAILIA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( MY QUESTION IS : WHY ALWAYS INDIA ????)
I agree there were some bad umpiring decisions but in the end India only needed to bat out a few more overs with wickets in hand and they couldn't.On another note, I have watched many cricket games and at the death all teams appeal excessively, not just Australia. Also for everyone complaining about India getting bad decisions, cast you mind back to when India benefited from decisions against England in the UK. Unfortunately every team faces bad decisions and it is how you react to them that is important. On the whole I think the Indian team have reacted well. The media have blown things out of proportion.
hi tata ra o how are yo bagunnafaaxa
Yes, the umpiring was poor. Yes, our India was worst affected. However - this does not, and cannot, excuse the batting effort on the final day. 1 wicket only was due to poor umpiring. The remainder to poor judgement and lack of patience. How else can you expalin 3 wickets in the last over. Kumle showed how to bat on the last day - if only the team followed.
I am disappointed that it was Symonds who got the Man of the Match award. It should have been Bucknor with two wickets and over a hundred runs to his credit that deserved the Man of the Match. We should lodge a complaint with ICC to ensure that the more deserving man gets the Man of the Match award. Bucknor displayed great team spirit (for those who came in late, Bucknor played for the Australian team.)
Well done Australia on a fine win. The better team clearly won on the day.
Mr. Peter, if this is a better team, then it should play fairly and prove it! Not by claiming catches and making umpiring decisions on the field. This better team has resorted to the worst and sickest form of strategy by alleging serious racist remarks to divert attention from a winning position, that India was in, squarely helped by the usual 2 more players that side with the australian team when in australia. In this test match, the better team unfortunately and unfairly lost!
NOT BETTER TEAM WILL WIN , UMPIRES CAUSED TO WIN .IN ALL ASPECT OF GAME INDIA IS NOT BELOW THAN AUS, AND INDIA ATLEAST DESERVE A DRAWHEY PETER YOU MUST WATCH TEST PROPERLY
A far better and professional side won.. Indians always cry and look for excuses, the team India is only after modelling and money, couple of bad decisions cant change the reslut of the game.. accept the fact that.. You are as good as Bangladesh.
ITS REALLY HURTING, THIS TYPE OF UMPIRING BLUNDERS WILL DEEPLY EFFECT THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME, INDIA SHOULD NOT PLAY ANOTHER TWO TESTS AND SHOW OUR PROTEST AGIANST THE AUSTALIAS DIRTY GAME PLAN... IF IT GOES LIKE THIS THEY CAN WIN ANOTHER 100 TESTS BRAVO AUSIS KEEP IT UP
YES WE AGREED THAT, INDIA MUST PULL OUT THEIR LEGS FROM AUSTRALIA, GIVE THEM A LESSON AND SHOW THE WORLD WE ARE PROUD INDIANS. AUSTRALIAS SHIT POLITICT SHUOLD STOP AND ALL THE CRICKET NATIONS SHOULD STAND TOGETHER
STOP YOUR HEADLINES. It does not make any sense
The non-dismissal dismissals of Ganguly and Dravid were disgraceful The Aussies are bunch of hypocrites who criticise others fo cheating and then blatantly cheat in their backyard. The umpiring was a disgrace - can some one please kick those two blundering old fools (Benson
Please take my comments to BCCII request BCCI to force ICC to use technology for all OUTS, we cannot be just spectators for wrong decisions, why should anybody face wrong things, when you know the truth why are we running away from it. Let any number of Umpires can come and go they will do mistake or they will cheat so why should anybody be victims of BAD decisions
I think the desire to win is so great for Australia that Symonds appeals for a caught behind against Dravid when he clearly can see that the bat was no where near the ball. Gilchrist, who is even in a better position, joins to get the danger man out. Similarly the catch by Clarke to get Ganguly out is another indication of the same desire. It may be noted that in the first innings, Ponting did not appeal for a similar catch but in the second innings, it was this desire which overcame the better judgement of the Australians. It is really a shame.
In 2nd Test betw Oz-India, the way umpires mindlessly giving out why are we interested in further matches .. It will be 4-0 defeinitely
Bucknor is also booked for the next test in Perth. I think we should give the aussies the match and not waste anyones time.
Even fixed matches are worth watching but not the one like this. It is a disgrace that Oz rely on these tactics (help of empires) to claim supremacy. Their karma will catch them soon.
Another defeat! All the brave talk by Indian captain and other players is just that...talk!And their newly acquired on-field and off-field aggressiveness, it looks so funny now...But I guess blaming only the players is not correct. The whole politics of the game, the stress on everything other than quality of the players, the regionalism, the biased/influenced selectors, an unconcerned Board...all are to blame. Australians may come across as too aggressive, but by God, they know how to win games. That is more important for our teams to learn, rather than imitating their verbal sharpness.
