Melbourne Former Cricket Australia chief selector Trevor Hohns, who presided over the country's last golden era in the sport, says Michael Clarke's team can return to the top of the Test rankings within two years.

Hohns's assessment makes it nearly two years ahead of the four-year deadline set by the Argus review, tabled last August, following the Ashes debacle.

"We're heading in the right direction, it might take a couple of years," said Hohns, who joined Australia's selection panel in 1993 and served as chairman from 1996 to 2006.

"A bit more experience for some of these young guys, but the bowlers are doing a very good job and we've seen the batsmen score the necessary amount of runs," he was quoted as saying in 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

Hohns' assessment comes following Australia's three massive wins over India in the ongoing four-match Test series.

"England over the last few years have been the best Test side, there can be no doubt. They've had a good unit that they've kept together for some time – That's what creates a good side. They've played a lot together and they all seem to peak at the same time.

"We'll get there as well. I think we're certainly heading in the right direction."
