India's protests over poor umpiring during their 122-run defeat reached a flashpoint with the ban on spinner Harbhajan Singh for allegedly racially abusing all-rounder Andrew Symonds.
The charge was laid by umpires Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson following a complaint from home team captain Ricky Ponting that Harbhajan had called Symonds a monkey, which saw the Indian public back home react with anger and disappointment.
India captain Anil Kumble accused the Australian team of being unsportsmanlike and several Australian sporting icons have said their cricket team had lost its ‘moral compass’.
Ponting and fast bowler Brett Lee endorse leading consumer brands in India, apart from appearing in sponsored television shows, and are among other current Australian players who write syndicated newspaper columns in India.
Almost all the top Australian players have signed up for the Indian board-promoted multi-million dollar Twenty20 league that kicks off in April.
"The whole country is against them following the cricket incident," Habeeb Nizamudin, growth officer of media planning agency Lodestar Universal said on Wednesday.
Largest Audience
"This is definitely going to impact their brand value. However, whether this will be sustained in the Indian mindset over a long period of time I can't tell."
India, which has the fastest growing major economy after China, possesses the largest global cricket audience.
Their cricketers are feted as pop stars in a country of 1.1 billion where top-ranked Australia also have a strong fan base thanks to their brand of entertaining cricket.
But they have crossed the line this time, some say.
Some feel the Indian players will gain by way of advertising from this incident.

Never buy anything advertised by Australians. I will convass everyone with in my reach not to buy anything esp with Ricky ponting, Micheal Clarke and symonds on it....We as Indians hate them
Australia is still under Queen Elizabeth ,But India ia an Independent country for 60 years. Generally independent people don't buy Products which are recommended by these People
I think that Indian promotors and ICL should dump Australian cricketers from this league. Their utter lack of respect for the game of cricket and Indian culture (Pawar incident ater they won a tournament in Indai last year) should be reason enough.
In spite of Kumble's request to take care of the issue themselves, AUS went ahead to complain with NO proof. How can you all call yourselves Indians if you still support these brands - now or in future. This incident should teach all supposedly brand ambassadors to really act like one.
Personally, i wouldn't buy any australian cricket player advertised.especially ricky ponting. iwill convass the public not to buy. they did not treat indian team well and they need only indian money. i used to be australian team fan.the way they behaved unacceptable and they still did not realise the arrogant behaving.their eyes only aiming the victory at any cost and misbahaing. thanks.
I spend half my time in India and half in Australia. The Australians are a very racist and arrogant race who only respect strength and not weaklings. Indian brand value will only increase if we stand up extremely firmly to them. My advice to the BCCI Int Ka Jawaab Pathar se - show no quarter in any form. In other wods a zero tolerance approach.
The Aussies should remember that they have themselves been at the recieving end of simillar behavior from the english a few decades ago, very dissapointing that the Aussie cricketing greats cannot digest their own medecine when it comes from a sub-continental player, Bhajji is a simpleton who got caught in their web of decietful mental games, and the cricketing world has paid the price, with a little help from Mr. Speed.
the indian brand is also going to suffer in aus aswell.......
Hey didspopulation of only one state out of over 25 states of india is more than double of your entire australia (e.g. Gujarat 55.5 million and australia 20.4 million). who cares for your market?
Brand value in Australia what value Australian market has?
Brand value? How about this for starters...AUSSIES ARE THE NUMBER 1 TEAM IN THE WORLD. In any sport that is brand value you simpleton.
I wouldn't buy a product which is endorsed by an 'Australian national cricket team player' currently. It was fine till before the beginning of the Sydney test. They were considered as professoinals, a team who can rise up from any stage. But right now, there is a defferent perspective on the whole team.
