There were one million visitors at the Auto Expo in 2006, which had generated business transactions worth Rs 540 crore. The biennial show this year saw a footfall of a record 1.8 million, with 1,50,000 of them being business visitors. Here’s how the fair fared

* There were over 1,200 participants from 25 countries at the Expo, which was held between January 10 and 17

* Products and services of over 2,000 exhibitors were displayed at the Expo, which was spread over 1,00,000 square meters

* Business houses recorded over 9,000 trade enquiries: 66% by business visitors, 21% by foreigners, 4% by co-exhibitors and 8% by the general visitors

* Over 65 vehicle manufacturers and more than 1,900 component makers had registered for the fair

* 100 MOUs (Memorandum of Understanding) were signed: 59% with business visitors, 27% with foreign visitors, and 14% with co-exhibitors

* Over 20,000 business meeting took place during the event

* Of the 1,200 exhibitors surveyed by the organisers, 50% admitted to having generated business. Nearly 94% of exhibitors said they would recommend their companies to participate at the next Expo

* First time shows such as robotics got orders worth Rs 30 crore and 1,015 trade enquiries

* A survey of over a thousand visitors by Indimoto.com reported that 91% of them found their visit worthwhile. While 73% said they liked the Nano's looks, 35% said they would buy it the moment it goes on sale

* It is estimated that of the three million two-wheelers, many will convert to small cars like the Nano

The Rising Star
Hall No 11 of Pragati Maidan was dedicated to the nation by P V Narasimha Rao in November 1994, but it only reached the peak of its popularity in January 2008, thanks to Ratan Tata and the Nano. However, the Nano was not the only car launched at the event. "We lost count after 31," said CII deputy Director Gurpal Singh, when asked about the number of launches at the Auto Expo.
