Kolkata, August 05 In a first-of-its-kind initiative to introduce automation in traditional sweetmeat industry, Kolkata-based Hindustan Sweets is planning to set up a 50,000 sq ft sweetmeat manufacturing facility in the city by 2009.

With an investment of Rs 25 crore, the manufacturing facility will have fully automatic machines.

The company will soon set up a customised automatic machine imported from Korea to manufacture rosogollas and other traditional sweets. “With the installation of the cutting and rounding machine, our manufacturing capacity will increase by 10 times,” said Rabindra Paul, director, Hindustan Sweets.

The company is also in talks with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur to buy a machine that converts milk into cottage cheese.

“We have developed a machine to churn out cottage cheese. Any private company can avail our assistance in developing such machines,” said H Das, Department of Agriculture and Food Engineering, IIT-Kharagpur.
