New Delhi, July 3 After adding a dash of colour to the dull public transport scene by introducing green and red low-floor buses, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is all set to introduce an automated ticketing system in the Capital.

The corporation will soon provide handheld electronic ticket machines to conductors, in an effort to make the service commuter-friendly, in at least three of its depots - Mayapuri, Sukhdev Vihar and the Hasanpur depots.

According to senior DTC officials, these handheld electronic machines have been provided by a private firm and have been put in use in over 100 buses since June 13. “We began with the system at Subhash Place depot on pilot-basis and will go ahead with three other depots now,” said a senior DTC official.

Since the system is being implemented on a trial basis, officials added the machines have been provided to the agency for free, for now.

“We will test these machines for a while and then see if the system is workable,” an official said.

Tickets generated from these machines, similar to simputers used to generate parking slips in New Delhi areas, have the route and fare printed on them. The other side of the ticket will be used for advertising and the revenue generated will be shared between DTC and the company providing the electronic machines. DTC officials claim the agency has already initiated a regular training process for conductors, who will be giving out the tickets. Each machine can generate about 3,000 tickets over a period of eight hours.

With this system in place, the DTC is also looking at generating enough data to study fare structure and commuter preference over routes. “We will have digitised and easily accessible information on preferable and profitable routes,” said a senior DTC official. The official also said the prime benefit of this system is that it is transparent and conductors will be more accountable when issuing tickets to passengers. “At least, we will have a better way of keeping a check on drivers and conductors,” the official added.
