“I think there’s so much noise these days that it’s important to blank the sound of certain things and delve on issues that matter. I was very shaken by the Bilkis Bano case and the long-drawn fight for justice. As for Manjunath and Dubey, I find a resonance of their lives in my own,” says the 33-year-old.
The album which features nine songs, speaks of issues like communal violence, social responsibility and the need for “collective morality”.
While there’s an entire number, Bilqis, that delves on the Best Bakery case, references to the others keep coming up in the album. The tunes are lilting, forcing you to take note of some powerful lyrics penned by Shergill. “I am an entertainer and it is to my interest to see that my music sells, but if there’s something I can do along the way to voice my social concern, then I shall. I don’t want to only speak of love and separation,” he says, strumming the opening notes of Bilqis, the song, which he says, motivated him to come up with the album.
The multi-lingual album has also managed to up its ante by being the first of its kind to be launched on Nokia’s select N series phones. But the formal hard-copy launch will be in May on Yash Raj music.
