New Delhi Leading Islamic seminary Dar-ul-Uloom has suggested to Muslims in the country that they avoid slaughtering cows on Eid-ul-Azha as a mark of respect to the religious beliefs of Hindus.

The appeal has been supported by the All India Organisation of Imams of Mosques (AIOIM), which had earlier asked Muslims to put black ribbons on their shoulders as a symbol of their solidarity and grief for the victims of the Mumbai terror attacks.

In a booklet detailing the concept of 'qurbani' or sacrifice on the occasion of Bakri-Eid, brought out by Deoband-based Dar-ul-Uloom, the seminary has advised Muslims to refrain from sacrificing cows to avoid hurting sentiments of the Hindus.

"They (Muslims) may slaughter other animals that are approved by the Shariah," the booklet said, asking Muslims to respect the sentiments of other Indians.

Established in 1866, Dar-ul-Uloom is the most respected school of Islamic teaching in the subcontinent.

AIOIM President Hazrat Moulana Jameel Ahmed Ilyasi said slaughtering cows hurts the sentiments of Hindus and ‘we should not do anything that will disturb communal harmony in the country.’

Ilyasi also asked Imams all around the country to pray for the victims of the Mumbai terror attacks during Eid prayers and express solidarity with Mumbaikars.

"They should pray to the Almighty during Eid prayers for restoring peace in the country," Ilyasi said.

Happy Eid by Ravi on 05 Dec 2008

Wish you all a Happy Eid. I think this is very good solution and it shows the real Indian spirit. What is said by the Dar-Ul-Uloom is really appreciatable and time demands it to maintain communal harmony.People like Kasim suppose to be understand the reality and dont try to spread hatred in the community. This is not only maintains communal harmony but also helps in keeping world cool. Be smart and enjoy the life with peace.

It's the economy, stupid by Najdi on 05 Dec 2008

These moron deobandies should stop dabbling into political matters. Guys, the bottomline is that our decisions (be it individual or communal) are governed by financial issues rather than religious sentiments. If hindus really want to protect the cows, why don't they buy the cows being sold for slaughter. Why not stop the hindu farmers who sell the cows? Thousands of cows are being (and have been) shipped to Bangladesh for slaughter, if we are so keen to protect them, why not curb this illegal trafficking? What about hindus in the south and north-east, they enjoy beef with relish....Truth is, beef is a cheap and readily available source of protein.

My head is bowed by S.M.Singru on 05 Dec 2008

As a Hindu, and an Indian, I bow my head in deep appreciation of this sensitive gesture. If only many of us would have a similar attitude, no evil power will ever be able to put its shadow on this great land.

Time bound respect? by Shivam on 05 Dec 2008

Is this just for now or for ever? respecting others is not a time bound virtue. Let us see if it is just gesture for time being to avoid Hindu anger or they have genuinely woken up.

Good gesture by Srini Janarthanam on 05 Dec 2008

Its a good move. People should understand that the way forward is to respect each others beliefs. I sincerely hope that this good gesture will be reciprocated by the Hindus as well. Muslims should openly criticize the terror attacks and shun the terrorsists be it Indian or Pakistani.

Why cows..? by Kasim on 05 Dec 2008

Who gave the right to Dar-ul-Uloom to dictate our only sacred festival in which way we want to celebrate. We have the right to celebrate our festivities in our own way. Dar-ul-Uloomcare so much about hindu centiments, then why does not he ask the hindus to stop drinking cow pees.
