Mumbai Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi has demanded that the agenda and correspondence of the state legislature should be in Marathi and Hindi, instead of Marathi and English, creating a flutter in the political circles even before the new government is sworn in.

“I have been educated in Uttar Pradesh and hence I understand Urdu and Hindi,” said Azmi in a letter to Anant Kalse, principal secretary of the state legislature on Friday. Azmi added that while the agenda and communication of the House were being given in Marathi to MLAs, the non-Maharashtrian legislators were being given the same in English. He said he wanted it in Hindi instead of English as it was the national language.

MNS MLA and the party’s group leader in the house, Bala Nandgaonkar, decried the attempts by Azmi to “bully” his way through. “This is wrong,” he said and added that it is necessary for Azmi to learn Marathi as he was elected by the people of the state.

Azmi, who has been elected to the legislature from Mankhurd-Shivajinagar and Bhiwandi East, has been on loggerheads with the MNS in the past, which had led to street fights between the cadre of the two parties.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray, known for his anti-north Indian campaign, said, “If Azmi wants the House agenda in Hindi, then he should go to Uttar Pradesh,” PTI reported. While the MNS has 13 MLAs in the Assembly, the Republican Left Democratic Front (RLDF), which includes the SP, has 11.

Learn Marathi ! by Maharashtrian on 01 Nov 2009

Do not like the attacks on non Maharashtrians in Maharashtra.Condemn them a 100%.However as a Maharashtrian, I would expect the MLA and MP of Maharashtra to learn Marathi.

RAJ is correct by J.Mahanty on 01 Nov 2009

Azmi is one of the People's represntatives from Maharastra, which has Marathi as the State language. Therefore Azmi is expected to be proficient in the State language. Indeed, this shd be a prerequisite for filing nomination for contesting the State Election.Hence I find raj is correct in his statement, for a change.

english as national language by sundar on 01 Nov 2009

Hindi has killed many local languages. tamil and bengal had resistance earlier. atleast due to political reasons marathi joining. it is good. the status of national language of hindi to be scrapped. or all the local languages to be made national languages. indian culture is not hindhi culture. local language should flourish. english can be national language which is universal.
