Colombo, February 2: At least 20 people were killed and 50 injured on Saturday when a powerful bomb, planted by suspected Tamil Tigers, ripped through a packed bus carrying civilians in a central Sri Lankan town.

The blast inside the private bus, heading to Anuradhapura from Kandy, occurred at 7:05 am local time at a bus stand in Dambulla town, located 148 kms from the capital Colombo, the army said.

Defence sources believed that this was another "treacherous act of the LTTE targeting innocent civilians," it said.

The blast left four passengers seriously injured. They were taken to the general hospital at Matale with head injuries.

Among the dead and wounded were many Buddhist devotees, who were on a pilgrimage to the sacred Anuradhapura city, Dambulla Police said.

Governemt cannot solve terrorism by acting like terrorists themselves. It will be a disaster. by Anand Babu on 02 Feb 2008

This is an act of terrorism. Killing people non related to the issue is atrocious. Those people who are working very hard to brandish LTTE as terrorists should know that, LTTE is capable of doing these. Tamil issue is a humanitarian issue started by the barbaric Shinghalese, terrorist JVP and supported by violent Bhuddhist monks. Taking military actions on a group after weakening them by calling them terrorists will provoke them to do such henious acts. The arrogant ruling government should take responsibilty for such sufferings thrusted on the civilians. Even as the Shinghalese military is killing young Tamilians in the northern provinces, this is the price the poor people have to pay. As long as flamboyant Rambo style rulers are at the helm, you cannot expect anything else. To solve this misery to people on both sides we need a satesman who can provide a soothing touch to this wound.
