Kolkata, November 26 Calcutta University’s experimentation with the 1+1+1 system of introducing two Honours papers in the first year has not gone down too well with students. The results of BA and BSc (Honours) declared today showed a marked decline in the number of candidates who have successfully qualified to take up Honours courses for the next year.

This year, the percentage of qualifying BA (Hons) Part I students was 75.69 as compared to last year’s 92.01 per cent. In BSc Part I, this figure reduced to 69.56 per cent from 83.91 per cent in 2006.

CU Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Suranjan Das agreed that the results present a disturbing picture. He, however, added students could be facing problems, as this was the first time the university was implementing this system.

“We will take steps to restructure the curriculum and even the examination system so that students are not overburdened in the first year,” said Das.

This year too, girls fared better than boys. In BSc (Hons), where aggregate qualifying percentage of Honours candidates is 69.5 per cent, only 64.15 per cent of boys qualified as compared to 75 per cent of girls. In BA (Hons), the aggregate pass percentage of the students was 75.69, of which 70.4 per cent were boys and 78.69 per cent girls qualified.

This year, the university, for the first time, published the results of BA, BSc Part I and II (Hons, General and Major) under 1+1+1 system and BA and BSc Part I (General and Hons) under 2+1 system of about 1,58,000 students at one go.

The university also announced December 17 as the last date for filing review forms for any two papers.
