Sydney/New Delhi, January 7: Raising the stakes, a furious BCCI filed an appeal with the ICC against the three-match ban slapped on off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and asked the Indian team to stay put in Sydney as part of pressure tactics to get its case heard.

Angry over the ban and calling it ‘unfair and unacceptable’, an emergency meeting of the Board decided to fight out the issue with the Australians and the umpires who had done India in the second Test which went in favour of the home team.

Arun Jaitley, a senior Board office-bearer and a well-known lawyer drafted the complaint against Match Referee Mike Procter's ban decision on the ground Harbhajan had racially abused Andrew Symonds and filed it with the international body within 24 hours of the decision as required under rules.

Parellelly it asked the Indian team to stay put in Sydney and not go to Canberra where a two-day practice match is scheduled from Thursday.

After the late night punishment handed out by Procter, a furious BCCI President Sharad Pawar called an emergency meeting at his residence in Delhi this morning where all options including pulling out of the series were said to have been considered.

At the meeting, it was decided to appeal against Procter's order and ask the ICC to suspend the order till the final disposal of the appeal.

Harbijan by racismrules on 30 Jan 2008

What a disgrace the BCCI is.."we'll take our bat and ball and go home if you don't do what we say"...so if what Harbi said was ok, then it must be ok for Aussies to call Indians "Curry munching ba$tard$" as it's a 'misunderstanding of cultures"...shocking...paints a bad picture of the Indian stance on racism

India - Australia cricket Match by Samarendra Nath Maulik on 08 Jan 2008

Match Referee Mike Procter's ban decision on the ground Harbhajan had racially abused Andrew Symonds only based only on the statement narrated by complainant and Aussies Captain Ponting. Nothing has been recorded / heard in any of the Media Channel. Also both the 'Umpire' had nakedly called unjust out to Indians and Save Aussies by breaking the very Rule itself. So India should withdraw from thee total series till the particular two / three Aussies plays, both the 'Umpire' and the Match referee are suspended for life from cricket world.

this is not cricket by vishal on 08 Jan 2008

Steve, thanks for your kind words. You are right. The sports being played out in Australia is not cricket and both the teams and their fans are equally responsible for the sorry state of affairs. There used to be a time when players like Zaheer Abbas and Imran Khan belonging to arch rivals Pakistan used to have a huge fan following in India. In those days fans enjoyed cricket without any feeling of partisanship or toxic pseudo patriotism. But it seems like the systemic corrosion in the overall value system all across the globe has caught up with Cricket also. It's shameful and depressing the way the teams are behaving. This hooliganism, disrespect, sledging, racial taunting is not cricket. This kind of boorish behavior is best left to the European football fans. We need sportsmanship back in the game. We need mutual respect back in the game. Above all, we need some gentlemen back in the game. Both inside as well as outside the field.

Aussies Atrocitries by Kamlesh Mohan on 08 Jan 2008

We should take a strong stand irrespective of the loss occured to BCCI. The attitude of Aussies is unpardonable at all occasions. Team India deserves respect for not boycotting the game on its own and not talking to media / arguments. In future we should not play /keep relations with Aussies unless they improve themselves. The main frustration of the Aussies is T20 defeat. We should take our stand strongly. It is softness which triggered Aussies to go for excess with Indian Team.

harbhajans ban by subbu on 08 Jan 2008

India should leave from Australia. This will be the best reply to Team Australia.

Harbhajans ban by Taraka on 08 Jan 2008

Looks like Ponting finally came up with best "defence" against Harbhajans bowling, by getting him banned. Is there anyone else out there who has a similar thought?

He meant to honor Symonds, not dishonour him!!! by Raja on 08 Jan 2008

I think the entire story about Harbhajan telling Symonds "monkey", is blown out of proportion. I think Harbhajan was trying to honour him, instead of racially abusing him. One of India's most revered gods is a "monkey," named "Hanumanji." Harbhajan was probably showing his respect to Symmonds by equaling him with that Hindu god. I think this will explain!! But, wait, isn't Harbhajan a Sikh. Do Sikhs worship the monkey god Hanumanji? I don't know. Hmmm,if they don't then there must be some explanation. I am sure he did not mean to hurt Symonds. After all we Indians are all non-whites, why should we abuse some one with a racial slur? Won't it be abusing ourselves? No no Harbhajan must have meant something good. We have to find out what!!

Sack Ponting and Umpires by Ven on 08 Jan 2008

Simple. India should demand that nothing less than removal of Ponting and changing the umpires will allow them to continue the tour.

Cricket Second Test by Steve on 08 Jan 2008

You guys won. It is a sad day for Australia and I am ashamed to say I am an Aussie in the context of what happened. The poor sportsmanship shown by Michael Clarke just wasn't cricket, and was absolutely unAustralian. When he didn't walk was pathetic, and the catch on the volley was even more appalling. Anyone who has played the game would know that both times there is no way he did not know he was cheating. Symmonds did the same. It is very sad that cricket is now following American sports and soccer down this ugly road of cheating. Downright depressing that Australia are the culprits. A big SORRY to India

sydney test by george on 08 Jan 2008

There is more in these blogs than cricket. The racism that is within the comments is obvious. I agree that India got ripped off in the test but the game is bigger than alot of remarks in the blogs. Once the responses refer to white supremists, match fixing, ICC hates India, etc. It indicates an underlying problem that has been bought to a head over a game of cricket. I think that if the Indian Cricket team is going to overcome the problems they have will have to go out in Perth and play their best and remember why they are representing their country. It is after all only a game of Cricket.

Answer to GEORGE's-coment: another Aussie supporter by Mukesh on 08 Jan 2008

Hello George, (please check this comment maker with 'sydney test' as heading-tag)You seem to be another one of those pro-white-supremists who is hell bent on supporting Mr.Ponting

why play without respect? by joe on 08 Jan 2008

I disagree as there is no point in playing a one sided game and under constant intimidation, indians are no cildren of a lesser god nor descendents of notorious convicts.come on bcci its time to flex the money musles here, of course let the yester year leaders taste their own bad medicine for a change.Welcome to the new uprising in world cricket from lesser known ,harder working nations.Indians should pull out if the ban is not lifted and if bucknor is allowed to umpire.

Kick out Australi by Jojo on 08 Jan 2008

Why does the papers not print the text of Procter's decision? Let us know on what basis the decision was made. Probably this will make a case against that dumbo as well. We should also team up with other Cricketing teams and find incidences of abuse or harrasment on/off field by the Australian team which is well known for that stuff. Probably it is time to root out the evil of sledging etc once and for all.

Cricket Controversy by Ram Paleti on 08 Jan 2008

My guess is that Bucknor who is on the verge of retirement has made his career-end bonus by agreeing to Ponting's bribe for getting the Indians out the way he did. It makes a lot of sense to me. Australians want the "glory" of 16th staright Test win and Bucknor wants to make the last "big Bucks' before he retires. Also in my opinion, Symmonds is the one who has a big psyche of "Racist bias" as he is the one who is always featuring in Racist controversies.Team Australia, for all its "False Glory " attained through cheating like this, should be banned for three years from participating in International Cricket.

do u have the balls by joe on 08 Jan 2008

pawar ji and co should have balls harder than the new cricket balls to fight this injustice..come on i wonder if any indian in BCCI has the balls to do anything. pity u lot ,go back u couch potatoes, you are a disgrace to indian and world cricket.U got shoved aside by ricky and u took it with a smile.First learn the game of cricket before you even think of playing with our players future.Your future in public life is doomed if you do not get a positive and thrash the aussie and proctors provocative verdict.

pawar powerless by JOSEPH on 08 Jan 2008

If sharad pawar cannot take care of one of the most respected players in indian cricket he has no right to be in public life ,in any form. he should be flattening cowdung in the remotest village in india and selling them for a living. crooks and politicians should be out of indian cricket. give those positions of power to people who can atleast bowl straight and bat straight, there is no dearth of good cricketers in india.Gr visy, gaekwad chandra, venkat etc

innocent by binu on 08 Jan 2008

If Sharad Pawar and co donot respond with a win over the ruling then they are standing by the white intimidation,im from melbourne and a very good part of aussies are behind the indians, everyone is fed up of pointing and his arrogant brothers. come on india ban all products endorsed by the aussie stars specially pointing, symonds gilly and michael clarke.

Dalmiya Vs Pawar by Subbu on 08 Jan 2008

Bring back jagmohan dalmiya.Had he been there, I am sure Malcolm speed would have begged BCCI to continue playing. 80% revenue to ICC comes from Advertisers in INDIA.I wish Dalmiya was there instead of Sharad Pawar . Pawar will cave in to demands of ICC white council in return for good kickbacks. We know he is a politician and can go to any length to make money out of every situation. I doubt he will have guts to resist ICC.If Dalmiya would have been there, SAURAV would have given a befitting reply to Ponting

The Alternate by Praveen on 08 Jan 2008

There is a way out. Let India go to Canberra and willingly offer wickets to Kangaroos. At the same time, while bowling to Aussies, we should not appeal for even a clean bowled. Let the match test match finish in ONE day and complete the formalities. The other way out is to gag up against Australians and pay them in their coin. While playing, interact with Australians in a friendly manner, but report to the umpires and Refree being called racist. The same way, they treated Bhajji. It is futile to show gentlemanship to a rogue.

BCCI needs alternates rather than following ICC by Ds and jack on 08 Jan 2008

The gestures Bhaji did to Lee are common in NFL (national football league ) side of the world. Lee should come in open to express displeasure, why they allowed Symonds butt in to make it look like Afro crisis.Instead of BCCI officials being bribed for lost revenues, they need to arrange matches in India to be played with ICL WORLD XI Team A, Team B, Team C. Have guts to find a different way to solve problem instead of being pressured about lost TV revenues by the televisions and BCCI. The above was in response to :"BCCI working committee is holding an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the standoff and firm up its strategy. With both sides likely to suffer financial losses and an unprecedented disruption of the cricketing calendar if the Indians return, Cricket Australia seemed anxious for an early de-escalation. James Sutherland, CA chief executive, said he was confident the tour would progress and asked Kumble and his Australian counterpart Ricky Ponting to sort out their differences."

Cheating, bullying tactis by rajiv ranjan on 08 Jan 2008

India should pull out of this series telling the criccket world that it is one way rules set by these so called white nations.

Australia vs West by Dr. A. Kumar on 08 Jan 2008

Read this article in an Australian newspaper. This article says and I quote, "By contrast, the Indians find offensive the word "ba$tard", a term that Australians often use as an expression of affection. http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,23019952-23212,00.htmlI have lived in UK and USA for over 30 years and have never heard a thing like this. BTW, I am an active member of Monkey Gym here.

The b-word by Sylvia on 09 Jan 2008

Believe it or nor, the b-word really is used as a term of affection over here. It is sort of used ironically in that sense. However, it is used as a term of abuse as well, depending on context. It is expected both parties are able to discern which way it is meant by the situation it is used in. By the way, my family detests the Australian cricket team, and are very disappointed at the way the test series has turned out.

Cricket by Kpande on 08 Jan 2008

Reading some of the messages, I get the impression that Indias are still Gulam to white supremacy. Pull out the team from tour, if there is any pride left

Politics of greed by Kamal on 08 Jan 2008

Not Indians but Indian politicians are GULAM to GORA Saheb. BCCI president is a politician, who eats his own words often for money. He left congress for greed and foreign origin but came back to serve her for money. Why do we need politicians in BCCI?

Racists comments in cricket by jagdish Kalkunte, M.D. on 08 Jan 2008

this is a typical "I said/he said" incidence and especially when english and Hindi is mixed. No transparency and no one is culpable. If ICC follows thro', India must with draw. Australia don't destroy Cricket. Let the games go on and change the umpires before it gets out of control

Cricket by Subbu on 08 Jan 2008

JagdishWhile I agree with you that games should go on, I dont understand your mentality about not rising against injustice. Its sad that people like you are still having mentality to live like a slave against foreigner.

Send under 19, and pull back current team by Brijesh Singh on 08 Jan 2008

In my views India should pull back all current team member and send fresh under 19 team for future matches, let this be the reply for racial discrimination.

Ban on Harbhajan by J. Ramanath on 08 Jan 2008

It was foolhardy if anybody thought the decision by Mike Procter would have been any different. In fact the on and off field happenings during the past week were a clear case of racism by team australia,ICC, Procter and Umpires against Indian players. The decision to ban Harbhajan for 3 tests seems to have been arrived at even before the hearing began. The whole world knows Indians would be the last to practice racism. The first ever crusader against the evil practice of racism, Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian contribution. It is time even umpires are brought under a code of conduct to restore parity between competing teams and unbiased decision making
