Chandigarh, May 14: Harbhajan Singh’s coach Davinder Arora on Wednesday said the BCCI’s decision to ban the temperamental off-spinner for five ODIs is not justified as it amounts to punishing the bowler twice for the same offence.

“Harbhajan has already suffered heavily as he was banned for 11 matches in the IPL, which is also a BCCI backed event. I feel the BCCI should have let him off with a warning and not penalised him once again,” the Jalandhar-based coach said over phone.

The BCCI banned the spinner on Wednesday for five ODIs for slapping his India teammate S Sreesanth and warned him of a life ban for any further misconduct on his part.

Arora, who has coached the cricketer since his early days, felt that Board should have taken a lenient view after the Indian Premier League banned him from the entire tournament besides fining him close to 3 crore.

Meanwhile, Harbhajan’s mother Avtar Kaur tried to evade a direct response on the matter but said, “whatever the Board has done must be right.” “I am learning about this (the ban) through you and have nothing more to say,” Kaur said as she hurried her way into her Jalandhar residence.

Chairman of the Punjab Cricket Association’s coaching committee, D P Azad also felt that the Board should have taken a 'lenient view'.

“Harbhajan is very good at heart and comes from a humble background. The slapping incident was an unfortunate incident, but Bhajji has repented it and promised such a thing will not happen in future. Therefore, the Board should have let him off with a warning,” Azad, who was Director of ‘Pace Bowlers Academy’, in which the spinner trained for three years in the mid 1990s, said.

Yea agree not justified for giving enough by Joe on 15 May 2008

They should have also proceeded with criminal charges and put this lunatic into jail. Five ODI ban is too little.

Ban on Harbajan by Suresh Babu on 15 May 2008

Harbajan should consider himself lucky that he has been banned for only 5 ODIs. The punishment is linient and slapping a colleague for temperemantal reasons has to be condemned.

Ban on Haribhajan by ranganathan on 15 May 2008

The punishment given to Harbhajan is too less for the offenses he committed. He should be dealt with the IPC.

harbhajan ban by krishna singh on 15 May 2008

Bhajji should be ban for life not for just few matches. It goes to show that slapping is acceptable in Indian culture which simply comes under physical abuse but it is just not thinkable in western countries particularly on public forum. Shame on you indian cricket officials, you're tarnishing indian image overseas. I think indians should stand up and say no to Bhajji.

Harbahjan episode by Roger on 15 May 2008

Harbhajan should be booed by the India public. Indian are fools to be dominated by such arrogant cricketeers when we cannot even win a single olympic medal. We Indians (1 billions of us)all should be ashamed of ourselves that we cannot excel in any sport but slap each other

thumbsdown by Suman on 15 May 2008

Roger,Could you please list how many medals have you or your relatives won for India? Its easy said than done. NOT IMPRESSED.

Harbhajan's punishment by Gangadhar Barve on 15 May 2008

Why involve Harbhajan's mother in this? Is he a small boy still? I hope media stops involving relatives of grown up sportsmen. If media do not listen to me I will approach their mothers to persuade them!

Harbi and Sree will be banned for life soon! by Jolly on 15 May 2008

We do not have to wait too long. Sree is still playing and the foreign teams will have a field day in sledging him for his girly tears!! He will lose his temper, and the match referee will pounce upon him! Same will happen to Harbi when he steps on the field abroad! Match referees will have an easy time now!

Too ittle, too late! by Dileep on 15 May 2008

Harbi has been a serial offender right from the days in Cricket academy (where he was booted out). He never learns. Greg Chappel has mentioned about this stupid fellolw's lack of discipline and arrogance in his report. The entire country and the BCCI looked away! Now 'Teri Maa ki...' is biting the BCCI and the country so badly that they talk of life ban the next time (I am sure it will be the very first match he plays after this ban!). Get rid of him and the arrogant and stupid Sreesanth aslo. BCCI missed a golden opportunity!

Ban this idiot coach also! by Joy on 15 May 2008

BCCI should ban this coach also. He is another idiot from the same place! No wonder! If some one is paid by 2 agencies, IPL and BCCI as a contracted player, and behaves like animal ALL the time, then he will be punished twice. One does not need to be a rocket scientist to understand this! BCCI should have banned Harbi for life. It will happen very soon as this hot headed hollow head cannot keep his temper. He will be bashed severely in a foreign country and also will be banned for life! Also Ban Sree, the very arrogant (second only to Harbi) and stupid guy. Both bring bad name to the country and cricket. I am sure both idiots cannot keep quiet very long (as other countries also will needle them)and will get banned for life!

He should be barred forever playing professional cricket, priod.

No preferential treatment for the guilty by P.P. TALWAR on 14 May 2008

It is strange that Harbhajan Singh's coach Davinder Arora from Jalandhar by defending the guilty, Harbhajan Singh is chllenging the authority of the BCCI, Disciplinary Committe who have been quite gracious and lienient to Harbhjan Singh who is a habitual offender. Indiscipline by any cricketer on the cricket field should not be tolerated in the interest of the game of cricket which is acclaimed as Gentlemen's game.

Gentleman's game? by Ramesh K. on 14 May 2008

Ever since money got involved into any sport, that sport lost its 'gentlemanliness' as professionalism has bred a class of people who will go to any length to score their point. Agreed, that getting physical is against all norms fair play, it should be noted anger is in-born, and can be ignited at a spur of moment, but then cool heads are seldom found.
