BCCI seen as a cash-rich bully, admits ex-chief

Melbourne, February 2: Former BCCI President I S Bindra has admitted that the Cricket Board was battling an image crisis after being projected as a cash-rich bully which arm-twisted ICC and Cricket Australia (CA) to get Harbhajan Singh cleared in the race row.

"There is that perception and those people have the right to that perception. (But) I hope that perception is not correct and I like to believe it's not correct," Bindra was quoted as saying in The Australian.

Bindra, however, insisted that the BCCI does not want to be seen as cricket's version of America.

"I would say that 95 per cent of those at the BCCI share that opinion, however the loud minority are the ones who have tended to show up in the media. That is not necessarily the media's fault, but also that the BCCI has not projected the right image," he admitted.

"But I believe and try to emphasise on others that Indian cricket does not want to be what America is to the rest of the world," he quipped.

Bindra, however, felt that the cricketing world at large might benefit from India's financial might.

"India is in a position where it can grow the game. It should be seeking greater responsibility, not more power. By using its resources wisely, and not just trying to impose a dictatorship, everyone should benefit from India's position in the game," Bindra said.

The former BCCI president said India only wanted to be treated as an equal in the cricket world but maintained that it has never intended to flex its financial muscle to get that respect.

"What we want is on the basis of every country being equal. We want equity, justice and fair play. We don't want money to be the main factor propelling the game of cricket. Of course money is important. But it shouldn't be important to the extent of dictating decision-making," he said.

Bindra admitted that some of the more talkative members of the Board have played a part in making BCCI look like a discordant house ready to wield financial power to push its agenda.

"Yes, there are people on the board who think in this way. But I am their critic, the first one to criticise them. I believe even the smallest country should have an equal say in the matter," he said.

Harbhajan was innocent by Suman on 03 Feb 2008

Dear Waxer, not only Indian public think Harbhajan was innocent, but Justice Hansen thinks so. In his judgement he mentioned, had Harbhajan said Monkey to Symond, still he would not punish, because Symond started it and he broke the treaty first by sledging Harbhajan. Whatever Harbhajan said was in retaliation.

Innocent? laughable by waxer on 05 Feb 2008

Harbhajan is a lying snake. I suppose all 4 Australians spontaneously lied- did you hear the stump mike? Symonds may have started it- I don't dispute that- But he admitted it, that doesn't mean Harbhajan has a right to racially taunt him, just as your despicable crowds did with monkey chants. Harbajan should show some honour and admit he lied, it is quite absurd to say he mistook monkey for a swear word, harbhajan didn't even come up with that defence until days later, also on the stump mike, when the aussies berated him for calling Symonds a monkey, harbhajan did not deny it- he just said symonds started it. Harbhajan has no honour and neither do any Indians who support racism by pretending the monkey chants did not happen.

Don't be concerned by Sujit on 03 Feb 2008

Why BCCI is concerned about their image. What some begger cricket playing country like Australia or England think about BCCI does not matter. Yes we have money and we will use our money power to fight injustice done towards us. USA also does the same thing for political field and they bother what others think about them. If some body has power he should use it, ofcourse not for any wrong issue.

bullies you are by waxer on 03 Feb 2008

You guys have got to be kidding, you really think Harbhajan was innocent? what planet do you live on? As to the BCCI, of cpourse they are bullies and hypocrites, why else would they threaten to abandon a tour like spoilt brats before they even heard the INDEPENDANT umpires verdict. The verdict was obviously political, the aussie players were told a lie- that if they agreed to downgrading the charge he would still be suspended. The BCCI forced the judge to find against the Aussies becaue it would have cost the Aussie management 70 million dollars if India pulled out. Don't be surprised when the rest of the world gets sick of your bullie tactics and gets kicked out of the world cricket comp.

bullies you are by JKS on 03 Feb 2008

Waxer...we are bullies for bullies like Symonds you aussie who think sledging is their right. We have given you back what you deserve. And please do not cry like babies as it will not matter to anyone. Your boys had misbehaved with Sharad Pawar when accepting the trophy. Can you tell us what your shit CA did and for that matter what your shit country did. Now you have got what you deserve. If you will provoke anyone of us again we will give you back the same thing. And we do not care what you feel about us. You aussies are known as cheats and big mouths and your ex PM was one such sample. And for now do us a favour by stopping to throw venom at Indian news sites...and confining yourself to your filthy aussie sites.

oh, very intelligent by waxer on 05 Feb 2008

Thanks for a well thought out and intelligent debate. Of course, if ALL Australians and our country are "shit" then I suppose ALL Indians and Your country are saints. Funny, why is our country so blessed with riches and a fun life- I work 30 hours a week and have 12 weeks a year holiday for $75,000 AU Dollars (thats about 2671737.0 in your weak excuse for money) There is no class system and it is against the law to discriminate on the basis of religion, race, gender or class (which doesnt exist). So, who's country is shit?

Why should you be apologetic? by shashi on 02 Feb 2008

Why should Bindra apologise for defending justice? The Australian and British cricketing establishments have made the rules to favor their teams so far. the Australian team has not accepted Justice Hansen's verdict-yet they want to make money from commercial ventures in India. It is time the BCCI should spine: (i) Ban sledging in India and interntionally, (ii) boycott Australian players until they stop sledging, (iii) seek punishment for Symonds who incited the event, (iv) seek punishment for Procter. Withdraw from the ICC if necessary.See how Muralitharan and the Sri Lankan team are being treated.Shame on the BCCI for not standing up to Australian bullies.

Support our Indians by Indi on 02 Feb 2008

BCCI is not a bully. Protecting an innocent Bhajji against criminals symonds, hayden, ponting and clarke is correct. BCCI should drag symonds and co to court and file a defamation against the proclaimed Monkey and his team. People in India should learn to support our own people rather than being on the wrong side of the line. ICC, and CA has long have arm twisted India for long and now its time for BCCI to throw shit on them and show what it means being bullied.

The Bully by Sridhar on 02 Feb 2008

Better a respectable monetary bully than an abusive loud mouthed bully like the Kangaroos. India should have gone further and got Symonds punished for provoking against the agreement between him and Bhajji

BCCI and the bungle by withheld on 02 Feb 2008

Absolutely correct. Not only those memebers spoiled the image of the country, it failed the players too in not speaking the right language to get that equal treatment for them. The players need some training on soft skills including on communications, Public relations and interpersonal areas, it would appear.
