Dhaka A mutiny in the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) was quelled as Premier Sheikh Hasina granted a ‘general amnesty’ to renegade soldiers, hours after the rebels demanding pay hike stormed their headquarters in Dhaka and opened fire on senior officers leaving three people dead.

"The Prime Minister granted them (BDR soldiers) a general amnesty," State Minister for Local Government Ministry, Jahangir Kabir Nanok, said.

His remarks follow a meeting between Hasina and a 14-member delegation of the rebel BDR soldiers at the Premier's official Jamuna residence.

Hasina also asked the BDR soldiers to immediately go back to barracks laying down their weapons while assuring them of considering their demands with sympathy in phases.

"We have promised to lay down weapons as she assured us of solving our problems in phases," BDR delegation spokesman Tauhid said after talks with Hasina.

The rebellion erupted during a 'Darbar' or meeting between senior officers and soldiers, where sources said the lower-rank troops got agitated alleging that the top brass had not taken up their grievances relating to pay hike, promotions and to make the paramilitary force an autonomous body with Hasina when she visited the headquarters a day earlier.

The mutinying soldiers took their superiors, including BDR Director General Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, hostage and opened fire inside the headquarters.

Three people were killed and 13 injured in the gunfire. The dead were a BDR officer, a soldier and a rickshaw-puller who was felled by stray bullets close to the BDR headquarters, official sources said.

Unconfirmed reports put the death toll as high as six.

The revolt in the BDR headquarters and barracks housing 20,000 troops sent shock waves across the country, which since independence in 1971 has had a history of political violence, coups and counter-coups.

Hundreds of army troops and specialised police forces encircled the BDR headquarters and Air Force helicopters hovered overhead monitoring the situation during the stand-off.

During her meeting with the rebel soldiers, Prime Minister Hasina also asked them to allow the stranded people, including women and children inside the BDR headquarters, to leave the complex immediately.

She also asked concerned officials to ensure proper treatment to the people who were injured in the firing.

However, newsmen and other witnesses outside the BDR headquarters said the gunfire was still underway despite the government's announcement of amnesty, as army troops continued to lay the siege around the complex.

"One of the members of the delegation (which met the Premier) announced in microphone on return that they will not lay down their weapons tonight," a witness said from the scene.

DANGEROUS GENERALS OF BANGLADESH by M.Arun on 25 Feb 2009

India's vote bank politicians and the Muslim clerics will exploit the present crisis in B'desh to bring in illegal immigrants from B'desh to strengthen their political power to weaken the country's demography and security. The 1971/72 scenario and plots by anti-India forces will definitely be repeated if the Home Ministry and the Border Security fail to take the necessary actions. The generals have a sinister motive for plots beyond B'desh.

Mutiny in BDR and general amnesty by Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury on 25 Feb 2009

The of revolt by the troops of Bangladesh Rifles is no good sign for the stability of the country. By holding officers and their family members hostage and by continuing day-long terror, BDR men finally proved to the entire nation that they are not safe for anyone while at arms. Althogh the Prime Minister declared general amnesty to the mutinous troops of BDR, the matter certainly deserves to be properly and comprehensively investigated. Nature of the recolt and body language of the mutinous troops indicate a very well planned instigations by outside elements. They also were confident of getting amnesty much ahead of starting the audacious actions. Although the revolt won’t be a threat to the stability of the state, but it’s certainly a serious threat to the security forces and their standing, their place in the structure of the state. Moreover, policemakers of the country should bear in mind, this is a fragile time, and this could be a very destabilizing factor.

Bangladesh Rifles Mutiny by Jamery Hasan on 25 Feb 2009

Any indian media does not have the right to term Bangladesh 'impoverished'. Isn't india an impoverished nation leaving millions of farmers commit suicide for debt. You should come and see who are more impoverished in terms of equity and social justice, India or Bangladesh? These days indian media is depicting their country as if it has become a part of the developed nation. The truth is india is still a developing nation like bangladesh. Is bangladesh far away in terms of 'per capita income' from india? you can easily check the answer: NO.I am writing from a place not far away from the place of the incident. I am assuring you the situation is not as bad as it sounds. We the civilian people believe that none of the forces, the bangladesh army and the bangladesh rifles, would not do any thing that will bring havoc to the people of Bangladesh.

BDR Mutiny by Swapan Chakravarthy on 03 Mar 2009

The word impoverished means that a majority of the people are below poverty line (which is all artificial). The farmers who commit suicide in India are not poor people but landed gentry. The farmhands working on these farms have not or do not commit suicide. Drawing parallels is good for a debate but that is not based on facts. Havoc is never created by common man. It created by the elite in their interest. hievement of perfection which will make Pak Army feel they were just humans!

Indisciplined forces which have developed taste of terrorists supported by the govt and they have tasted power will only result in to this sooner or later. Even the pak forces are due for this, its a question of time.

Pak Forces by Swapan Chakravarthy on 25 Feb 2009

Mutiny within Pak Army is unlikely since they are paid by US! They also can earn extras by selling drugs and clandenstine arms. Maybe include some items from the AQ Khan network.
